Restaurant at The Halfway Bridge Inn
Halfway Bridge, Lodsworth, Petworth, GU28 9BP
One of those delightful sturdily built Sussex pubs that suddenly materialise round a bend in the road, demanding attention, and more often that not receiving it. This one has taken full advantage of the move towards dine and sleep, with luxurious suites and bedrooms that would charm most people out of any desire to move one inch further. So whilst the 17th century still prevails it does so with deference to time moving on, most certainly as far as the restaurant is concerned, where a combination of the best of the London markets and sound local produce blend by means of an exciting menu. Amongst the starters expect to finds sautéed pigeon breasts, smoked haddock with spinach and poached egg, or herb crusted sardines. One of those delightful sturdily built Sussex pubs that suddenly materialise round a bend in the road, demanding attention, and more often that not receiving it.
West Sussex rack of lamb competes with grilled whole lemon sole or roasted quail, but my money goes on the homemade steak and kidney suet pudding with creamed potatoes and braised cabbage.
The desserts offer the customary range of temptations, including a simple baked rice pudding much enlivened by butterscotch sauce, which makes in an interesting variant on the customary raspberry jam, but keep an eye open also for the baked Camembert served with homemade sultana and almond bread, with red onion chutney. En passant they recommend a dessert wine from Sicily, Moscato de Pantellaria, which is seductive in the extreme.
A good wine list, excellent service and the distinct feeling that they are out to please for all the right reasons makes this a place not to miss.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at The Halfway Bridge Inn
Elizabeth S (5 April 2011)
The food, service and overall experience were one of total enjoyment. All food freshly prepared and what a choice! Moules, venison steak – superbly cooked and a choice of delicious homemade desserts. We eat out a lot and we will be back. Unfortunately we live a distance away. I wish it was more local to us. I thoroughly recommend.

We didn't stay so can't comment on the rooms but had lunch at the Halfway Bridge last week. We've eaten at Trent's in Chichester which we enjoyed and The Crab & Lobster in Pagham which was superb - both are owned by the same couple trading as The Sussex Pub Company. Our lunch was a huge disappointment. To start with the menus were sticky. Starters: soup of the day described as an Italian tomato, cabbage and garlic and bean soup tasted of nothing other than tinned tomatoes and tired cabbage. The breaded whitebait was over breaded and over fried in old oil and the trout was dry. We all quietly hoped matters would improve but if anything it got worse. Main courses: pasta pesto with red peppers - again very average, very little taste - peppers were the best bit. Belly of pork: revolting. The pork managed the clever trick of being both dry and greasy at the same time. The crackling tasted as if it had been dipped in the same old oil as the whitebait. The dauphinoise potatoes also tasted very strange. When asked, I was very honest and the, very friendly, waiting staff were clearly taken aback. After consulting with the chef they offered to bring me an alternative - I was only able to eat about 1/3 of the dish – however, as my companions had nearly finished, and given the quality of the other dishes, I declined their offer. Venison steak: again very dry, very little flavour and dry mash. The best items appeared to be the chips and creamed spinach my daughter ate. Puddings: we shared a sticky toffee pudding and a chocolate tart - both were okay but nothing special. We eat out regularly both in our business, my wife and I organise corporate events, and personally and our guest is a chef and hotelier. We all agreed that this was one of the worst meals we've had for a long time - especially given the price of £40 a head - the pork was not removed. The members of staff were very friendly but the overall impression is of a pub with little or no direction where the kitchen doesn’t care or bother to taste their food. Let's hope it was an off day but we won't be bothering to find out.
