REVIEWS OF Restaurant at The Mermaid Inn

I took my parents to the Mermaid Inn as a treat when we visited Rye. The atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely. The outdated furniture in the separate bar area let it down a bit as this place is so beautiful. Anyway back to the restaurant which was our main reason for being there. The food was good, extremely tasty and the service was actually the best service I have received in a restaurant yet and I have been to some very good restaurants. The staff were very helpful and attentive without being overbearing. I don’t normally like my glass being refilled by the waiter but on this occasion they would wait until I had finished and then poured as I would have done myself. Some changes to our meals were dealt with effortlessly. I was so impressed I wrote to the restaurant to thank the staff. Not sure if it had any bearing but we went to the restaurant on a Sunday night. It was busy enough but plenty of staff about to cater. I would definitely try it and hope you have the same experience as we did.

My friends and I went out to Rye the other weekend. After two hours of driving from London where we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful landscape and sunny weather, we had built up quite an appetite. We found The Mermaid Inn on one of the narrow cobble streets in Rye. The décor was pleasing, rustic, giving us the impression of good quality food and service of higher standard. We each ordered different dishes, I ordered a cream of broccoli for starters and a cod with beans and mash dish. The broccoli soup didn't taste of anything but of cream and broccoli and a bit of chopped almonds, there was no substance to the soup. I had half my soup when the pepper and salt did not liven up my taste buds. Then I got my main, which looked promising, but was left even more disappointed. I couldn't taste the difference between the cod, the beans, the vegetables, and the mash. I could not have any more after four bites. My friends who ordered the duck leg with wine sauce and the lamb dishes also found their food rather tasteless. All the dishes were bland; maybe the cook ran out of salt that day. I don't eat a lot of salt, so if even I start pouring salt on my food that must have indicated something. To add further insult, the waiter didn't even flinch an eye when I let him know that I was not happy with the food. He responded ‘Oh, I'm sorry’ and proceeded to carry our dishes away. They then added service charge onto our bill. At least they didn't put a fight when we informed them we would not pay the service charge.
