Having seen some other reviews about the food and service at the Mount Somerset I was a little apprehensive, especially as I had recently booked an evening meal for myself and my girlfriend. However the food was absolutely marvelous and the service could not have been better. The staff were attractive, polite and attentive and we had the most delicious three course a la carte meal, in fact, it was the most delicious meal I have ever had. The wine was delightful (even at £29.95 a bottle) and the desserts were so good I asked for the recipe. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting that special evening. The food and the setting made it a night to remember.

We stayed at the Mount Somerset for a few days. The breakfast comprised of what appeared to be mechanically reclaimed sausages, mass produced bacon, of the type injected with beef extract to make it taste of something, polytunnel grown mushrooms and sliced bread straight from the plastic bag. They even managed to burn a poached egg - how that is possible we couldn't quite work out. The entire food experience was awful.

Two fish dishes for dinner were undecided between bland and mediocre, a £30 bottle of wine passable and an £18 bottle of wine so rough it was undrinkable. A pudding was uncooked. That aside, a venison starter was superb, the staff really nice and the suite was out of this world. They should fire the chef so the rest of the staff don't have to make excuses on his behalf and hire someone who can firstly cook, and secondly doesn't have pretensions above his station. At the best part of £300 per night, this was not acceptable.
