Restaurant at The Pierhouse Hotel

The Pierhouse Hotel, Argyll, Port Appin, PA38 4DE

One of the best of the temples to seafood that ply their trade up the West Coast of Scotland. For some the formula does not vary all that much and it is centred round totally fresh fish and seafood caught in the clean, cold waters for which that coast is renowned. What happens after that can vary quite considerably, though in general some of the best seafood on the table in Britain is to be found between the Mull of Galloway and John o'Groats. Add to that a wine list which produces, for instance, house Chardonnay and Merlot at £11 and you have it all.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at The Pierhouse Hotel

Simon (14 October 2008)

I disagree with the previous reviewer. It is a charming well run hotel, and most importantly the best family hotel in the vicinity of thirty miles around Oban. I had the pleasure of staying there with my two young children, aged one, and three years. The members of staff, and the owners were very diligent, and so thoughtful of our family needs, even before we required them. The family room we stayed in was perfect for our family. An access door to the main bed room, which was in the corridor adjacent to our room meant we were not disturbed. There was some noise from the bathrooms, but this is true for all hotels, unless you are in a suite. The food was also good, and the seafood and game were perfect.

I don’t think that it is a bad place to stay but I do think that we can’t use any beautiful words to describe that hotel/pub/restaurant. It’s a place just as good as dozen others on the drive to Oban itself. It’s a nice place to run away from the stress of your life. Seat in the bar with a beer or have a quick microwaved chowder. It’s nice and busy but is quick and cheap at the same time. You pay for the area around the hotel not a hotel quality. You can see and talk to all local, friendly people and most important - relax. Food and wine offering is quite simple but sometimes you like simple dinner just like at home. As we say it’s a nice place to go but it’s not a place for the Good Food Guide because it simply doesn’t belong in that league, and it’s not the hotel you would go back for. It’s for a view and local folk.
