Your Reviews of Restaurant at The Rummer Hotel

Rebecca (27 January 2010)

I tried the Rummer on a whim, with no particular reason behind it and I'm very glad I did! The restaurant itself is small and cosy with a huge fireplace dominating the far end. Its selection of spirits is truly intimidating! The service is superb with the waiting staff politely attentive whilst not being over bearing. My starter of potted quail, a whole quail nonetheless in bacon and grape broth was delicious and innovative, if a little tricky to eat. My chosen main of beef was possibly the best piece of beef I'd ever eaten, in a subtle sauce with a complimentary mix of flavours and delicious daupinois potatoes. The dessert was to die for, smooth lemon tart with a sharp lemon sorbet and sweet butterscotch sauce, such an amazingly complementary set of flavours I could have eaten it twice! The prices aren't cheap, but it's worth every penny and more. As far as I’m concerned, the Rummer is one of Bristol's best kept secret and part of me hopes it stays that way so that I can still get a table when I go back.

A recent review in the paper, from a critic who is usually quite harsh but accurate, prompted me to visit to The Rummer Hotel. The review proclaimed this restaurant to be producing the best food in central Bristol. I had to find out for myself. The menu was fairly limited on choices, but they were wise choices. I wanted to order almost everything on it. I went for the crab cakes, followed by the beef rump. Both were of excellent standard, fairly simple preparations of quality ingredients, and cooked perfectly.

It is highly recommended for quality British cuisine.
