Restaurant at The White Swan

Llanfrynach, Brecon, LD3 7BZ

The Welsh Marches produce a good crop of really worthwhile restaurants, amongst which is the White Swan. Perhaps it has something to do with talented chefs seeking the peace and quiet of the area after the insanity of places that shall remain nameless. One of the hallmarks of such places is their ability to locate quality - and I mean quality - ingredients with impeccable pedigrees. So here we have meat from a local butcher in Talgarth, organic vegetables from Penpont and venison from a nearby farm. Given materials like that almost any chef would be off to a good start. Here we are talking about Lee Havard and Stephen Way so the chances are even better. The short, formal menu changes every few weeks.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant at The White Swan

Rosie (14 June 2008)

We popped along for lunch today and the garden was nice with shade being provided by a lovely mature wisteria. I ordered some whitebait served with paprika mayo, which was good enough. There was real heat in the mayo and it came with a sensitively dressed garnish of mixed leaves. What followed was some real comfort food in the form of calves’ liver with bacon, which was a bit of a disappointment. The liver was overcooked and poorly prepared. Unfortunate as it was obviously a good ingredient. The service was informal - two waitresses, both of whom were friendly enough but didn't seem too knowledgeable about the food. When we asked one to name the herb oil used in the salad dressing accompanying the whitebait, no answer was forthcoming. A promise to ask the chef was similarly unanswered. All in all, good enough for pub food but I’d be surprised if they hold on to their bib with a showing like today.

Alan Williams (1 January 2008)

In December, our first visit for two years showed that previously high standards have been maintained. A smoked haddock risotto with poached egg starter was superb, and a large enough portion for two people. The mains of rib eye steak, lamb and a crabmeat and fish combination were all well presented, well cooked and of similarly generous proportions. With a bill (two courses for four people, with pre dinner drinks and two bottles of wine) of 125 for food of this quality, it is excellent value for money. We'll be back.
