Deep in rural Wales Ty Mawr offers a taste of old Wales, yet is only 30 minutes or so from Carmarthen. Other tastes of Wales make themselves welcome in the dining room of this ancient house and starters might consist of locally smoked Shetland salmon with king prawns and horseradish or a duck and port pate served with cranberry and warm wholemeal toast, followed by a sorbet of passion fruit not ungenerously splashed with vodka.
No self-respecting hotel on Wales could go without some Welsh beef on offer and their sirloin is braised in port and Guinness, with pickled walnuts. A seared breast of duck with warm cherry and warm caramelised red onion chutney offers strong competition, whilst vegetarians will rejoice in the mushrooms and port baked in Parmesan pastry, topped with brie.
A decent wine list covers most eventualities. The atmosphere is relaxed to the point of restfulness and your only problem is likely to be returning to the real world beyond all this perfection.

What an excellent venue for a first night out with someone you have just met. On entry, you were made to feel at home with the view of walking boots drying in the entrance hallway. The posh appearance of the country house dissolves into a warm greeting and being ushered into a very comfortable lounge/sitting area complete with open fire. The meals were well presented and cordially served. I would highly recommend the Big House to all my friends as somewhere where one of the most pleasant evenings I have ever spent.
