Restaurant at Wasdale Head Inn

Reputed to be the place where British rock-climbing all began, I for one would not wish to dispute the claim. Certainly as you approach the hotel through the descending gloom of a November evening, possibly after a long day out on the fells, it is a welcome sight indeed and thoughts of log fires, rum butter and hot baths are closely followed by a touch of menu speculation, which is unlikely to be disappointed.

Abrahams Restaurant, named after a great Lakeland character of the last century, has nicely panelled walls and real atmosphere. Mark Nixon, the long-serving, award-winning chef has seen it all and produces traditional English cooking that leaves the keenest appetite purring.

For those tempted to overnight - and the urge is often quite marked - Mark's breakfasts are a defining point for people to whom breakfast is a daily challenge. A good wine list with four house wines all at £11.90.
