Restaurant Martin Wishart

54 The Shore, Leith, Edinburgh, EH6 6RA

The elegantly simple interior of Restaurant Martin Wishart forms the perfect backdrop against which the food takes centre stage. Wishart's inimitable style revolves around subtle flavours and delicate sauces, which allow the flavour of the produce to come to the fore. The French influence of the menu compliments the variety and quality of fresh Scottish produce hand selected by Martin Wishart, including seafood, game, and beef. Restaurant Martin Wishart can be found on The Shore in Leith, run by Michelin star chef Martin Wishart. Few would dispute that the restaurant which brought Edinburgh its first Michelin Star, to which it has since added Four AA Rosettes, is anything but simply the best.

Overlooking the Water of Leith, customers have a pleasant and relaxing perch amidst the many distractions of the area beyond in which to relish Martin Wishart's inspired cooking. Backed by seven chefs and seven front of house staff, an impressive ratio for 45 seated, the service is every bit as confident as the cuisine, which can be challenging.

The best possible ingredients abound. A roast halibut fillet with slices of glazed pig's trotter, confit tomato, braised endive, pomme galette and sauce gribiche is typical of dishes which set a high standard both in execution and enjoyment.

REVIEWS OF Restaurant Martin Wishart

Karen (16 April 2008)

My partner and I recently ate at Restaurant Martin Wishart. We received a warm welcome and the food was lovely. The service was a little odd and we couldn't have a conversation as there was a waiter at the table always, I found this a little uncomfortable. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and I’m glad we went.

Staff were friendly. Warm welcome. Ambient and excellent location. The food didn't live up to it! Went for the taster menu and there were some surprises and unexpected flavours within... but overall a rather disappointing experience! When you spend £500 between 4 of you - you expect something a bit special and unfortunately the most pleasing aspect was in the slightly overpriced wine (with the exception of the dessert wine @£28ish - which was a good buy). Had listened to rave reviews and believed the hype. Well presented, delightfully portioned meals - lacked the overall "punch"! When you hear someone is a "high-hitter", you expect your taste buds to be whacked and unfortunately, I didn't lather up an expectancy; "course on course". The canapés were decent and the smoked salmon on the "taster menu" was mouth watering! The langoustine ravioli was laughable. The venison tartare and steak cannelloni was really a mistake - especially the ill conceived mustard mayonnaise and the garlic velouté with scallop - which was a good concept, but was really overall "burned out" in the flavour.

The cheese board was fantastic. The selection of breads were what you would expect... we were with a couple of vegetarian diners.... their emmental and parmesan soufflé looked and smelled fantastic... but it didn’t compensate for a generally disappointing meal.

Anyway, don't want to put you off ... the ability and obvious commitment to "breaking the waves" was there to be had.... but unless you regularly frequent fine dining .... you should really try out the lunch menu .... and take things from there..... Don't be fooled by the price - went to the Windlestraw Lodge in Walkerburn a couple of months ago.... the food was leaps and bounds beyond this.... and half the price.
