felicini - West Bridgford (West Bridgford)

We have been there three times and each time it was excellent - the waitress was friendly even though it was busy she made time to get our daughter her special birthday cake. Wonderful food and atmosphere, and overall worth a go - not much else to compare with in Bridgford.

San Carlo - Manchester (Manchester)

I have been to San Carlo in Manchester at least fifteen times in the last eighteen months. I first discovered it one weekday evening in June 2008 and I have not looked back. The food is exquisite! My brother-in-law accused it of being over-salted, but I find this totally untrue. However, what I like most is the service and the atmosphere. The busy, buzzing, vibrant and truly exciting feeling which spreads all over the restaurant makes you feel as though you have stepped into a massive family dining room, and you never feel self-conscious, the way you might feel in other high quality, popular, city centre restaurants. The service is very friendly. I have made friends with many staff members as I am a linguist and they have various European backgrounds; they are Italian, Albanian, Slovak, Cuban...the list goes on! There is always a new language and a new culture to learn when they bring you the delicious zucchine fritte or fried courgettes. I have never met such friendly waiters. They are accommodating to every need that a customer might have, and so very eager to satisfy. Such enthusiasm is not seen in Manchester for quite some time.

Cumin Restaurant, The (Nottingham)

We were in Nottingham on business recently and the hotel recommended trying out The Cumin. What a treat! Not the most accessible restaurant - electric wheelchair users may struggle with the angled step - and unfortunately the accessible toilet was out of order during our visit. However, Sunny was a brilliant host and the food was totally divine so we overlooked the access difficulties and enjoyed the complementary poppadoms served with homemade dips - fresh and delicious and we could easily have dined on these alone! We were blown away with delight by the flavours in the tandoori paneer but the dish of the night has to be dal makhni - even writing it down makes my mouth water all over again - it was truly sublime. The Cumin serves truly authentic Indian cuisine, washed down with lashings of draught Cobra, please fix the accessible toilet before our next visit so we can drink even more! If you're in Nottingham, you must try The Cumin.

Anong Thai (High Wycombe)

Four of us went to Anong Thai in November. It was properly cold outside so it was a relief to enter a cosy, warm room with a welcoming atmosphere. We ordered the plates recommended for sharing and I'm glad we did, there's too much good stuff here not to share the joy. Good servings, well presented and a great range of flavours. We were looking for a 'secret' restaurant we could rely on when in this part of the world - I think we may have just found it.

Mango Lounge Windsor (Windsor)

This was the first time I've been to Mango Lounge, upon a recommendation from a friend. The food was absolutely amazing, and on the whole, I would genuinely rate this as the best Indian restaurant experience. The menu is different from the typical menus found at Indian restaurants - the chef's specials are not to be missed. The quality of ingredients was to very high standards - well cooked dishes, preserving all tastes and textures. The staff was very friendly and knew the menu very well. They were able to talk to us about each dish and make recommendations according to our tastes. We were also fortunate to be able to meet the Head Chef, who was very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. Value for money - definitely! You are paying for the standards, the pure ingredients, and the art of the Head Chef – it’s worth every penny.

Class Rooms Restaurant and Bar, The (City & Fringes)

I had dinner with my date and this is for certain a romantic place. The food was simply perfect and there’s a very good wine selection. Fish specials are not what you usually find in London restaurants. Our waitress was very keen to help with the choice for both wine and food. It has a very nice atmosphere too.

Galvin La Chapelle (City & Fringes)

I had been following the opening of the Galvin brothers’ first venture into the city of London ever since I had a fantastic lunch at their Windows restaurant earlier this year. I didn’t think that experience could have been beaten, what with the fantastic views and fabulous food. However, I was pleasantly surprised. La Chapelle is the fine dining option of two restaurants, the other being Café de Luxe, both being joined together by a super cool bar. The first impression is one of ‘wow’! The dining room has been expertly converted, retaining the wooden beams in the ceiling as well as exposed woodwork. A mezzanine area makes good use of the space and the overall feeling is one of luxury and style. At last, a true destination restaurant in the hyper trendy Shoreditch area of London. Although this was only their second day of opening, the whole operation was slick. Whilst there were understandably not many diners, all staff were attentive and helpful. Chris Galvin himself even came out of the kitchen and spoke passionately and enthusiastically about his career and how both he and his brother Jeff had ended up in East London. All of this showed the personal touch and a real wanting to understand what his customers liked through hands-on feedback.

The menu is typically French bistro style, along the lines of the Galvins’ other extremely successful restaurants – why change a winning formula? The marinated scallop and Noirmoutier potato starter was a perfect combination and very easy on the eye. The lasagne of Dorset crab was equally well presented and was extremely light, a great combination of both textures and flavours. We opted for the roast côte de bœuf for our main course. Again, the theme continued as the meat was perfectly cooked to medium rare and the truffle macaroni an excellent accompaniment. The hermitage jus was so deep and flavoursome that we had to ask for more! For desserts, the pear tart tatin was amazing, nicely caramelised, and the chilled chocolate fondant was excellent, with a great liquidy centre. Being greedy, we also shared a plate of cheese, with our informative host recommending a number of different types, depending on our tastes. For each course, we asked the sommelier to recommend glasses of wine to compliment the food. Needless to say, each one was spot on and at prices to suit our budget. The overall experience was an excellent one, all the more impressive as this was only the second day of opening. This restaurant looks like a winner and I am sure will become extremely popular with both the city suits and local residents like us. We will be back. Thanks for the great evening.
