Standing alongside the Ouse river in the centre of Bedford, this splendid house built for the 5th Duke of Bedford in 1794, makes an impressive sight. Within, the River Room Restaurant offers a wide ranging cuisine of quality with dishes that command respect.

Disappointing, I went to the Swan with my girlfriend on a midweek evening. We had the set menu and although the surroundings were lovely and service good, the food was really quite poor considering the price and surroundings.

We both had a meal from the set menu. Avocado with prawn in puff pastry didn’t' work. The avocado was cooked and bordering on mushy, the prawns were almost not to be seen and tiny and the overall flavour was reminiscent of school dinners. Beef medallions for the main course were over cooked and not particularly tender and certainly not a substantial meal.

The only saving grace was that the treacle sponge was good. Whether the a la carte was any better I don't know, but we shan't be trying it based on our experience with the set menu.
