Riverside Brasserie Description

A child of The Fat Duck, this relatively new and attractive place at Marina Bray aims to offer the unashamedly high standards of its parent to a wider audience - and so it does. The genius and skill which Heston Blumenthal has lavished upon Fat Duck for the last eight years has transferred, along with his former Head Chef of many years standing, Garrey Dawson, with a high degree of success, into humbler surroundings and at considerably lower prices. An interesting wine list offers a reasonable selection under £20 and there are very fair by-the-glass prices. No pipes or cigars in the dining room.

Sadly, we were not impressed by it. The lunch was on my daughter’s twenty first birthday, and the staff were not prepared or able to do more than one candle on a slice of lemon tart. The food is expensive for what it is, the portions tiny and not great slabs of slow roast pork as described in one review. The vegetables were more like in a pub, peas, green broccoli and chips, although the portions are much smaller. We had to ask for more for which we were charged. I wrote to the owner complaining but he has not had the decency to reply. Do you want to eat next to the filling station with its smelly diesel?

Lunch at the Riverside Brasserie in Bray proved disappointing after all the rave reviews. The volume of music coming from the restaurant was probably more for the benefit of the young staff than the diners lunching outside on a glorious hot day when the peace of the river would have been appreciated. My party of four were greeted with a list of what was no longer available (including chips which were later seen to be served to a child). Duck confit which was sent back as appearing to be undercooked was returned with the report by one waitress that it had been cooked for 24 hours, contradicted by the other waitress who joined her to say 60 hours with both amending their versions to either 12 hours or 48 hours. For however long it may have been cooked a second attempt to eat the returned portion proved it too tough and it was willingly exchanged. At this point, though, a platter of smoked salmon was ordered so that the other guests would not have to wait. My bream proved to be a tiny portion and dry. Perhaps it was not a good idea to go in August - maybe the chef was on holiday!
