Riverside Brasserie

Monkey Island Lane, Bray, SL6 2EB

A child of The Fat Duck, this relatively new and attractive place at Marina Bray aims to offer the unashamedly high standards of its parent to a wider audience - and so it does. The genius and skill which Heston Blumenthal has lavished upon Fat Duck for the last eight years has transferred, along with his former Head Chef of many years standing, Garrey Dawson, with a high degree of success, into humbler surroundings and at considerably lower prices. An interesting wine list offers a reasonable selection under £20 and there are very fair by-the-glass prices. No pipes or cigars in the dining room.

REVIEWS OF Riverside Brasserie

Alf Ledbury (27 July 2008)

My wife and I ate at this fabulous restaurant last Wednesday and have done many times before over the last five years or so. This is the first review I have ever written for a restaurant and only felt the need to after reading what Mr Edward Blagg had written. All I can say is that he must have been most unfortunate as I can't recall ever having a slightly bad meal. We brought our daughter for a birthday meal and discreetly requested on the night that the chefs do something special for her. When her dessert arrived it was on a huge square plate with 'happy birthday' and her name following! She was over the moon. Now back to our meal on Wednesday - faultless. Lucky for us we were blessed with sunshine that day so had the whole meal on their fantastic decking, our table was positioned side on to the river so that both my wife and I could watch the peaceful river traffic go by. My wife started with pumpkin tortellini and I had the pork salad, according to my wife the pasta could only be beaten in Italy and that would be a challenge. I have the same starter every time and I simply love it. For main course I had the lamb rump, which is new dish I have noticed for this year and was without a doubt the tenderest and flavoursome bit of meat I've eaten in a long time. A waitress later told me it was down to the brining and the way they slow cook it. Whatever, it was stunning. My wife had the mushroom risotto; you might guess by now she's vegetarian. We both finished off with the lemon tart as it never disappoints and a great way to end a meal. The meal was washed down with a bottle of Tattinger and worked out to be about £55 per head, a bargain considering the quality. Five stars from us.

Six of us had dinner at Riverside Brasserie on Wednesday evening. We were very impressed, despite the weather not being too good. We had our pre-dinner drink on the riverside decking where we were also given the menus to look through. The menu had only had five or six starters, main courses and desserts, which I think is good, a mix of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. The interior of the restaurant was very elegant considering its location, the chefs are on view and I noticed they really take care over the preparation and presentation of the food. The food was lovely; my starter of pumpkin tortellini with sage butter was to die for, followed by lamb rump and a cheese selection. The wine was also very good and it worked out to £50 a head for three courses and everyone had wine. The only thing I think they could do to improve is to offer another choice of potato, they only had chips. Overall, this place is highly recommended.
