Riverstation Description

For the most part, you will be oblivious to the fact that the Riverstation was formerly a police station, unless of course you make the connection with the name. Apart from that, the location right on the river with a view of the old docks along with the modernistic architecture of glass and steel combine to lend a rather more serene atmosphere. Downstairs, the bar is ideal for a quick bite while the informal dining room upstairs is equally welcoming.

The one AA rosette restaurant focuses on fresh and seasonal produce and from the a la carte, you could choose the roast Scottish scallops, Jerusalem artichoke fondue, parsley oil and pea shoots before moving on to organic salmon with wilted spinach, beetroot, watercress and orange beurre blanc. For pudding, the passion fruit crème brulée with langue de chat does very well, and all this can be accompanied by a glass of fine wine or a pint of chilled beer.

We booked this restaurant for Valentines night 2009, got a booking for 21.45 and arrived on time and were seated promptly. Then we were ignored for 15 minutes. We flagged down a waitress who took an order for a bottle of white wine. 15 minutes later we were still waiting for it. I flagged down a waiter who apologised and brought the wine to the table, no cooler provided, and took our order for food. About 20 minutes later the starters finally arrived - mine was stone cold and my wife’s was barely warm although she ate it. I didn't eat mine and although the waiter apologised and asked if I wanted something else I declined. We then waited another length of time before deciding enough was enough and informed the waiter we were leaving. He informed the manager who didn't want to know, so we just walked out, never to return.

I ate at the River Station for the second time just before Christmas and the food was to die for. The pork belly was really soft and tasty and the dauphinoise potatoes were the best I have ever eaten. The food is consistently good, service excellent, and I love the homemade breads. Of all the restaurants I have been to in Bristol, this by far serves the best value a la carte dinners.

When one of the country's most respected and leading critics says that a restaurant in this group is 'the best Italian Restaurant outside London' it is time to take them seriously. Britain's love ...
