Roka Description

Located in the sunset strip of Charlotte Street, Roca offers a new take on Japanese cuisine amidst a plethora of mainly blond timber. The action takes place on a truly enormous grill which sits centre-stage of an eating surface to which comfortable chairs are drawn up. The result is that diners have the finest opportunity to see the fresh food and witness its conversion into what you may be about to order. Some might find this a classic example of Japanese subjugation of human individuality, but nobody seems to mind and if the company does become a bit passé you can fill the gap by making bright observations about the brilliant sashimi.

Most of the expected dishes are there including a selection of five sashimi, seaweed salad, pickled cabbage with a more than passing whiff of garlic to it, to the best of them all, a confection of crispy prawn, cucumber, sweet chilli and chrysanthemum.

Amongst the larger entries we find lamb cutlets combined with Korean spices, a hot-pot of sticky rice harbouring some interesting mushrooms with ginger, and udon noodles with spinach, bean sprouts, pickled cabbage and shredded duck.

This is by no means an inexpensive night out but the quality is evident and service is friendly and alert. A minor set-back is that you are ushered away from the table after two hours should you enjoy yourself so much that you become oblivious to the passage of time. More subjugation?

Your Reviews of Roka

Disappointed (17 January 2008)

We went to Roka for a dinner and tried the premium tasting menu. First, I must say, I felt let down by the service. When spending so much money, one expects a certain level of service, but we didn't get it. We ordered drinks, nothing fancy, just three beers and a sparkling water, but they did not come. In fact, our starters arrived after waiting for 20 minutes, still the drinks were nowhere in sight. When we inquired about the drinks the waiter assured us that he would get them, only to come back and ask us again as what drinks we had ordered. Three beers and one bottle of water! The dishes on the premium menu were nice, except that they overcooked the quail. However, the food was brought, but as none of the waiters could speak clear English, we were left clueless about the food we were eating, not to mention the cheap wooden chopsticks. I left full, but was so displeased by the service that I really felt ripped off. I would not recommend this place, due to the bad service. I cannot really fault the food, which was very well presented, and nicely prepared, but as per the money, we were not treated very well.

AJ (3 January 2008)

We had two of the best food experiences of 2007 at Roka - one was a business lunch no expense spared, and the other was lunch with friends. The service in both cases was exceptional and the food out of this world, especially the dessert platters particularly for me, as I’m a complete cheese and biscuits man. It is not cheap, but worth the expense for the culinary experience.
