Root

11 Rood Lane, London, EC3M 8AZ

Root's mission statement, if it has one, could be summed up in their own words as "wholesome seduction". Let me say at once this refers entirely to the quality of their food which is dedicated to using highest quality seasonal ingredients, and many of their ingredients are sourced from that excellent movement that is changing the face of food, farmers' markets. So whilst Root may not be a fine dining experience it certainly offers everyday food that is worthy of serious attention. In fact it is essentially an overgrown sandwich bar, (there's one table only) very chic in a functional sort of way, spotlessly clean and full of cheerful people both sides of the counter, with a signature dish of cream cheese mash, an adjunct to all their main dishes.

Dishes come under various headings, such as breakfast, specials, main root, soups and sandwiches, slurp root, salads and sweet. Customers are free to make up any composition they like from the many choices available. If J Oliver works so hard for improved fodder in schools, he must surely have nothing but approval for Root's mission to offer decent snack food to the toiling masses in the City, and hopefully other places in due course.
