Rose and Crown Description
After a heady, but alas! all too brief an entry into the new Millennium when the place was receiving rave reviews, the Rose and Crown became threatened with development. Enter Martin Burgess, ironically a property developer who, out of pure self interest (he says), decided he could not bear to lose his local and transformed it into a gastropub. If that description sits ill with some people rest assured that it has been done well and its renaissance seems to meet with general approval. The décor verges on the sensuous and for those who loathe the clickerty-clack of heels the oak floors are not welcome news.
The menu changes monthly and could include a ballotine of duck with kumquat chutney, a fillet of seabass with pea veloute or a button mushroom risotto. Puddings perhaps do not have quite the same degree of flair but they meet the need and could be a banana tarte tatin, a duo of crème brûlées or a fruit salad in a Pimms syrup with mango sorbet. Service is of a very high standard, somebody has clearly gone to the trouble of really training people who take a pride in what they do.

Your Reviews of Rose and Crown
M. Savage (6 February 2007)
We have recently had yet another enjoyable meal at this establishment. The new owners Ben and Lucy Williams have maintained and some would say surpassed the superb reputation that has become associated with the Rose & Crown.
The carpaccio of tuna to start with tasted as amazing as it looked and left us excited about our main course of the Duo of fish (salmon and sea bass) on a bed of their now locally famed risotto.
As usual the risotto was perfect and the fish cooked to the highest of standards. The barman had excellently recommended a refreshing bottle of Pouilly Fume to accompany our meal and his choice could have not been criticised in any way at all.
This restaurant has always been one of the 'hidden gems' of the North's dining places but surely with service and food of this standard it is only a matter of time before the secret is well and truly out
You will not be disappointed!

The Rose and Crown has seen a lot of new owners in recent years, but none have transformed the place like the new family! The restaurant has become a cosy and warm place to relax. The food has moved towards a more seafood based menu which is arguably the best you will find in Yorkshire! Long may their reign continue.
