Rossini

20 High Street, Wendover, nr Aylesbury, HP22 6EA

For 500 years Rossini has stood in the heart of the village High Street, yet even today it feels as exciting and original as it was before, and continues its purpose of providing the people of Wendover with good food and drink. Enjoy an aperitif at the bar area before moving in to The Stable perhaps, with its reclaimed oak floors and stock bricks, for a cosier dining experience. The menu has its roots buried in classical English, European and Mediterranean cuisine prepared using fresh local ingredients, complemented by a selection of daily specials. Ham hock and quail egg terrine with homemade piccalilli, and prawn, avocado and tomato rilette make for some interesting starters. Mains cover all bases from tournedos of beef Rossini and roast saddle of venison to oven baked fillet of sea bass and char-grilled honey glazed baby poussin.

REVIEWS OF Rossini

David (21 February 2010)

We went for dinner at Rossini on Saturday night for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food and service was faultless and we were made to feel very special. I had the scallops to start, which were full of flavour and nicely dressed with a red onion and tomato dressing. My wife had the special Mediterranean prawns in garlic butter and chili. To follow, I had venison with a port sauce which was delicious. The venison was perfectly cooked and the richness of the sauce complimented it very well. My wife enjoyed a rack of chiltern lamb which she said was the best she's ever tasted. The desserts were also very nice, apple pie with vanilla ice cream and a chocolate mousse for the Mrs. We were lucky enough to get a table in the upstairs part, which has an amazing original fireplace and beams. The only shame is that the bar area is not bigger as we would have liked to have had a drink before sitting down, but it was very busy so we chose to go straight to the table. I would definitely recommend it and we will certainly come back.

My wife and I went to Rossini for lunch with two friends on Wednesday in October. This Italian- style restaurant is situated in the centre of Wendover, an attractive little market town with some very good boutique shops. It is conveniently sited opposite the public car park - 50p for three hours. We all opted for the fixed price lunch at £24.75 and every course was most tasty and enjoyable. My wife and I started with melon and ham, which was very prettily presented and our friends had the crispy chicken salad. To follow, three of us had the game pie and my wife had salmon. For dessert, we all had the apple and pear tart tatin. The wine list is good but slightly expensive and we had a good bottle of Rioja at £16.95 but Nuits St Georges at £90 was available. This was followed by coffee. The surroundings were pleasant, the service excellent and we would not hesitate to go there again.
