Roti Restaurant Description

roti restaurant edinburghThe proprietor of Roti, none other than Tony Singh, formerly head chef on Britannia, Britain's last Royal Yacht, has reinvented himself in new guise. Roti, he is careful to explain, is a restaurant serving Indian food. Imagine the subtlety of the Indian sub-continent with its panorama of spices, blending with the best of Scotland's renowned ingredients and you have the picture.

He is, of course, too modest to add that by so doing he is offering Edinburgh the best of both worlds, as evidenced by, for example, the chicken roulade with a fried quail's egg, rive vermicelli and aubergine compote. Amongst the lighter dishes expect to come across shami kebabs, shallow fried minced and spiced lamb medallions, or roasted pickled salmon with saffron yogurt. The kulfi is nothing less than a highly edible work of art.

Come to think of it, the harmony with which the cooking styles of individual cuisines can be enhanced by somebody prepared to step out of the box and think imaginatively about different ranges of ingredients, could provide ample justification for the establishment of a Chair at one of our more enterprising Universities. A study based on the sculptural qualities of a yellow lentil and chocolate chip ice cream pudding for instance, could provide interesting cross referencing.

Over 100 years ago tiffin boxes were invented in Mumbai, with the express purpose of transporting a light midday meal to ones place of work; a little something to ease the pangs. Roti now offers its own brand of tiffin boxes loaded with innovative snack and casual food for tapas style grazing and sharing on the premises. Tiffin lunches are served Tuesday - Friday between 12 - 2.30pm and from 5 - 11pm.

The range of tasting menus for both carnivores and herbivores was recently extended, increasing the opportunities for discovery to those feeling their way through a new or hitherto only partially understood cuisine.

From which you will deduce that Tony Singh is exploring exciting and demanding new territory that could have an impact on Indian cuisine well beyond the city walls of Auld Reekie.

Their Website will keep you abreast of developments within the activity pattern of this skilled and innovative restaurant with a difference.

The Smorg (4 April 2008)

Had a wonderful meal there on a quiet Feb Tuesday night. The wind tugged viciously at my brolly and the rain drove into my face like the full power spray from an over keen car washer trying out his new Karcher spray gun.

Even so, Roti was still half full and the subdued lighting and well thought out decor welcomed me in like a favourite aunt who loves to bake.

Service was excellent and the decor and the menu is a fresh twist on a old ideal. I could almost hear the beeping of small horns and calls of 'get that bloody coo oot the way' as I left auld reekie for the delights of the Jewel.

Starter was served quickly, though not so fast as to be annoying. Went for the quail - simply divine. Main course was an amazing beef vindaloo - and this was the most wonderful Indian meal I have ever eaten by a long, long way.

Though billed as a vindaloo, it was no hotter than a madras to be honest, so if you want that 'slap on the puss', reaction it may be wise to ask for it to be livened up with a firelighter and a smattering of chillis.

That being said however, it defies written praise - I suggest, in fact I quite simply demand, that you go there, order it, and wonder at the effort that goes into its creation.

10/10 for service and for taste.

Angie (28 December 2007)

I've been there several times now, it's fantastic and has to be one of the best Indian meals I've ever had. The tiffins are a great idea, serving individual meals, and are plenty to wett your appetite! The tiffins provide just the right amount of one particular dish, that you can afford to get stuck in to another one – it’s a great idea for sampling different things on the menu. It’s highly recommend, and my partner and I give it 10/10.
