Rowley's - Jermyn Street Description

Rowley's Restaurant opened in 1977 and has been famous around the world since then for its Entrecote Steak and secret herb butter sauce, which is left to sizzle on the table, accompanied by an unlimited supply of 'the best French fries in London'.

However, it has now extended way beyond that by offering a full choice of dishes from skewer of marinated lamb with sweet rice and cucumber raita through to traditional English battered cod and chips with homemade tartare sauce.

It is situated in the building which was once home of the original Walls Butcher Shop, the owners of Rowley's have kept the charm of this 19th century land mark site alive with the original tiled walls and ceilings, the stained glass windows and the plaque above the front door unveiled by grandson of Queen Victoria in 1930 in remembrance of the last in line, Thomas Wall.

Your Reviews of Rowley's - Jermyn Street

Thomas Wright (29 December 2005)

Rowley's in Jermyn Street has been a little Pearl since decades. With new restaurants coming and going this is the place which deserves to be here for another 30 years! I went there for a Xmas meal after I went there last year. The management changed and you can tell. The new Head Chef is a Uwe Schwarzenholz and the improvements are big. Known Rowley's as a more Gentlemen, male orientated Restaurant (looks at the famous Steak and other meal dishes) I was surprised finding the menu lighter and fresher. Still heavy on the meat side but with lighter garnishes I also can spot very good fish dishes and even vegetarian dishes. Also some nice salads have been added.

The decor of the back restaurant and toilets is dated and needs updating, but overall with the old butcher shop front its very romantic especially in the evenings with dimmed lights and the little oil lamps on the table. Also the service has improved, with the new manager Carlos, a very friendly nice Spanish chap. He will answer any of your questions promptly, he is friendly and charming. He also informed me that the decor is being updated over the New Year and that everything else will also get updated during the next year. I can only say Fantastic Food in a Fantastic Place.

Paul Owen (22 December 2005)

The steaks and fries are very good. But I was disappointed on my last (attempted) visit that they did not action my online booking and I had to go elsewhere. Would not have been a problem but they seem not to answer the phone either. If you can't speak to someone don't bother and go to the Gaucho Grill (2 minutes walk) instead.
