Rumwong was opened in 1976, when Thai food was still quite a rarity in Britain. Perhaps partly because of this it was a success from the start so much so that now it is much in need of expansion. Rumwong Thai Market opened in 1991, alongside the restaurant and has become a major supplier of Thai commodities in UK. The food at Rumwong is much praised and in the Khan Tok Room there are no chairs, only cushions on the floor where diners sit and eat authentic food in authentic surroundings. The menu for this room would occupy far more space than is available; suffice to say that in some ways it's perhaps a good thing I do not live anywhere near Guildford.Thai

The table and floor service are five stars - no need to ask for anything ever as every detail is accounted for. The staff are impeccably presented - hair, makeup and uniform - all extremely professional, no standing around talking, welcoming and respectful. They are quiet in a perfect way, friendly and smiley. Fabulous choice of food and the sense of the Thai culture, in four years of discovering this place, we have never experienced a bad meal! We even tried to learn a bit of Thai, for example, kapunka means thank you! The layout and restaurant decor is also immaculate. We spend about £30 a head for a drink and two courses! Incredible food which we could never fault! I'm going back in three weeks and only went last week. It is a place to celebrate or go for a well deserved treat and to take people for the experience, but imperative to book in advance as I believe this place to be fully booked!

Our Aussie pals wanted a special meal for their last night in the UK and Rumwong came up trumps. Excellent food, a comprehensive wine list and attentive, but not overpowering service. I don't know why we had left it so long since our previous visit!
