S & M (Sausage and Mash) Cafe - Spitalfields
48 Brushfield Street, London, E1 6AG
S & M Café, short for Sausage and Mash, offers tasty and imaginative variations, as well as good versions of the original, on the theme of the genuine English breakfast, specialising naturally in London traditional sausage. S & M Cafe - Portobello, the original of all the S & M's currently in London, outlawed the deep fat fryer, as well as reviewing the contents and quality of what went under the grill and other more health-relevant bits of equipment. So it's out with the grease, chaps, and in with premium sausages, herbal teas, vegetarian compilations and cranberry juice. Which is not to say that you are left powerless to tuck away a good breakfast at midday, should you feel so inclined, though by that time you have to accept the All-Day-Breakfast, consisting of London traditional sausage, free range egg, mushroom, beans, tomato, bubble and squeak and toast.S & M Café, short for Sausage and Mash, offers tasty and imaginative variations, as well as good versions of the original, on the theme of the genuine English breakfast, specialising naturally in London traditional sausage. The veggies strike back with the All-Day-Veggie version, which is as above but excluding all the naughty bits.
Then there is the gourmet sausage range, including the gamekeeper, with venison and red wine, and wild boar with apple and cider, and the counties version called the Cumberland and Lincolnshire.
They also have some decent bottled beers and the like, with, amongst the soft drinks, a mysterious range of beverages called Fentiman's drinks that owe their genesis to botanic brewing. There's also delicious Victorian lemonade, said to be - wait for it - sausage friendly - the ultimate accolade!

REVIEWS OF S & M (Sausage and Mash) Cafe - Spitalfields
S and M Cafe (20 November 2007)
I am a big fan of your operation and have visited a number of times at Spitalfields over the last couple of years. Unfortunately my visit this lunch time was disappointing not least because I had dragged someone along singing praises etc., and basically I was embarrassed. Why?
It took too long for our order to be taken and for the food to arrive - over half an hour from start to arrival of food on the table - we both ordered the exactly the same - sausage and mash, the Spanish sausage special, with a bowl of minted peas - not complicated even at peak time.
When it arrived it was no more than lukewarm and the gravy was looking a bit congealed. We didn’t complain though because we’d waited half an hour and we didn’t want to be distracted further - it was a business lunch and we had offices to go back to after lunch etc. The sausage looked pretty unexciting and didn’t taste as special as you’d have thought a special would. It cost £20, which to be honest given all the circumstances was not good value.

A short review. Ate there a couple of weeks ago. Very nice food but one BIG drawback. The portions are TINY, which is not what you want with sausages and mash (especially when you're paying £8 for it). Even my girlfriend was still hungry afterwards and her appetite's tiny.
