Saffrons Description
Saffrons is an independently run bistro located in the heart of Worcester's New Street. The fact that they have been around for over thirteen years suggests they are a firm favourite among locals. They encourage an informal style of dining and seek to appeal to people of all ages who want to enjoy freshly produced food in a relaxed atmosphere.
While the building retains its original features, the décor is minimalist and the unpretentious members of staff add to the convivial feel. Guests can enjoy a pre or after dinner drink in the upstairs lounge bar, which is accessorised in a homely manner. The dining area can accommodate up to twenty-six guests and their set menu makes ordering easier. The private party room can be hired out for events while the bar and the dining area play host to informal buffets.

It was around three weeks ago but while on this website, I thought I'd say something. Saffrons is a cosy restaurant with excellent service from a bubbly Canadian. I had fresh scallops with chorizo, rocket, and roast cherry tomatoes, the scallops where seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. My wife had Thai fishcakes with some kind of dip sauce, which she thoroughly enjoyed. For mains she had some kind of honey butter chicken curry with coriander rice, I tried some and it was one of the best curries I've tasted, sweetish and creamy similar to a korma but also had a lovely kick to it as well, superb. I had something from the specials board - fillet steak stuffed with a dolcelate cheese and topped with crispy pancetta, and a red wine gravy/sauce, again seasoning was spot on and the steak was the perfectly medium rare, I loved this meal, one of the best I've had in a long time, and definitely the best I've had in Worcester in years, if you're in Worcester don't waste your time or money anywhere else.

My wife and I have young children, and few baby sitters, so we do not go out as often as we used to. We have dined at Saffron’s several times, and have always been impressed. So when we decided to go out on Saturday night to celebrate my birthday, it was a bit of a no-brainer. As usual, while selecting from the menu the waiting staff bring two complimentary delicious tapenades – one olive based and the other tomato – and fresh warm bread. Tempting as the starters are, we find we struggle to enjoy the full three courses, and being dessert people, if something has to give it is the starter. So we set to work ordering the main courses. My wife ordered a chicken breast in garlic butter, with fresh vegetables and sautéed potatoes. I had the pan-fried halibut steak with prawn and white sauce, which was served with crushed herb potatoes and green beans. The halibut was delicious. The potatoes were boiled and then ‘crushed, so it was not as smooth as a mash, and mixed up with a selection of fresh herbs. It was a great idea, and a great combination of flavours. I don’t know where Saffrons gets their supplies from, but the quality of their ingredients are always superb, and it is perfectly cooked and presented.
For dessert my wife chose strawberry mess – sliced strawberries with pieces of meringue and crème fraiche in a tall sundae glass, and I opted for melting Belgium chocolate pudding with a black cherry sauce and Chantilly cream. We would have been happy with any other item on the dessert menu had neither choice been available, but we are so glad they were. The word ‘heavenly’ can be over-used, but believe me, it was entirely appropriate to describe these desserts. The atmosphere was as pleasant as ever, and the service as efficient as always. I still cannot fathom out how the proprietor managed to get access to my entire record collection for his mixed tapes, except to say the music was certainly to our taste, and at the perfect volume to be able to have conversations in a normal speaking voice. We made a decision after the meal that whenever we get a night off from the kids in future, we won’t bother risking disappointment elsewhere. We will be back to what we consider to be Worchester’s best restaurant.
