Sanctuary Cafe

51-55 Brunswick Street East, Brighton, BN3 1AU

Sanctuary Café has every reason to celebrate. Having been part of Hove's café scene for over fourteen years they are also one of the few places, which cater for vegetarians this side of Brighton. With an aim to work towards creating a greener planet, they source ingredients locally to avoid supply chain carbon footprints. So whether it's one of their copious salads, homemade hummus with a drizzle of olive oil or quiches and pâtés, you can rest assured that it's all good, honest produce. Pump up your calorie deficit with a banana and coconut cake and raspberry brownie. The rustic décor with assorted works of art and comfortable sofas accentuates the homely feel, while the Cella room downstairs is where all the action is, playing host to poetry reading, comedy and live music nights.

REVIEWS OF Sanctuary Cafe

Samantha (29 July 2008)

I had been to this restaurant several years before and had remembered it being really good, but not this time. The members of staff were cool and unwelcoming. I went with a baby and the highchairs were dirty. It took several baby wipes to get the tray of the highchair clean. Not only did it have food caked on it but it had black grime where it had never been washed. The reins to keep the baby in had mildew and more caked on food. After the state of the highchair I thought I would wipe the table with a baby wipe, again lots of black grime came off. The food, we had quiche and two salads, was bland and quite frankly I was worried whether the same hygiene was applied to the food, so couldn’t quite relax there. As a member of the vegetarian society, I was very excited about going back to this café but I was totally disappointed and felt I couldn’t leave soon enough.

I was really disappointed by the service at the Sanctuary Café on my trip this Saturday. Earlier, there was a big, varied menu, good service and tasty food. The two tofu burgers that I ordered, came 45 minutes late, and that too with burnt buns. Even the chips were powdery. This dish used to be my favourite, but not any more as they are skimping on all the aspects that made it special - salsa and mixed root vegetable chips. I found the staff languid too. This cafe no longer stands out from the crowd of pseudo-vegetarian Brighton joints.
