Sapporo Teppanyaki - Liverpool

134 Duke Street, East Village, Liverpool, L1 5AG

This is the original Sapporo restaurant, now also represented in Manchester. It is an evening of culinary entertainment; make no mistake, you are about to submit to an experience that will derive just as much fun from the surroundings and preparation as from the enjoyment of a Japanese cuisine that invokes local ingredients with great skill. Teppanyaki means "hot table", so no prizes for guessing you will be sat round a hotplate whilst chefs perform feats of dexterity and derring-do with cooking equipment, yes including the knives, flames and ingredients. Seafood, chicken and massive steaks come and go, and with luck you will see their interpretation of the California roll in the making, with swordfish, Lancashire cheese, carrot and crabmeat wrapped in flying fish roe.

As you can imagine the atmosphere is delightfully relaxed and there is no need to go on to the theatre - it is all here under the same roof.

REVIEWS OF Sapporo Teppanyaki - Liverpool

Benedict Luk (9 January 2007)

The restaurant is one of the most popular places in Liverpool for partying with a group of people. The ambient of the restaurant is unbeatable. Chefs are friendly, noisy and funny.

Two of us ordered special Sapporo sushi for starter. It is a 16-pieces sushi dish with sashimi (raw fish), which was enough for us to share. The fish was fresh, colourful and well presented. After the starter, warmed plates were produced by the staff. All staff members are well trained and professional, from order taking to food and wine serving.

For main courses, we had monkfish and beef teriyaki. Both dishes were nice and simple, however, the base marinades tasted the same, which was sweet soy sauce. There was not much cooking skill and technique involved. All the food was served with roasted potato, vegetable and fried rice, surely it is enough to fill your stomach. Wine list of the restaurant was slightly disappointing. You can buy most of them in supermarket and there is a lack of selected wine.

We were so full that we can’t fit in any dessert. However, their dessert menu has good variety. Banana tempura and chocolate spring roll sounds irresistible.

There is no doubt about the chefs’ performance and their tricks were fantastic. It is a bit noisy in the restaurant specially we were there on a busy night. It is an excellent place for groups, but if you want a romantic night out with your love, you might have to leave it on a quieter night.
