Saxon Mill, The Description
With its riverside setting, The Saxon Mill gives you an opportunity to relax with tasty food and wines in pleasant surroundings, taking in unrivalled views over Guy's Cliffe - there cannot be a more spectacular situation for a pub anywhere in Britain. The atmosphere at the Saxon Mill is relaxed, friendly and informal, while the overall impression is of a pub, which is comfortable, light and open.
Their attention to detail and quality of service ensures your whole dining experience will be one to remember. A great deal of thought and effort has gone into the complete re-design creating a totally new interior, with open kitchens, stone fired ovens and log burning fires, offset by beautifully landscaped decking for alfresco dining.
The menu is simple but up-to-the-minute, with lots of comfort appeal, with homely dishes like pizza, steaks and pasta as well as contemporary, global touches to keep things lively; all delivered by friendly and cheerful staff. Their wine list contains well-known favourites, alongside little numbers from around the world.
To set the right note of fashionable sociability there are sharing plates, Spanish tapas of stuffed pequillo pepper, tortilla, Parma ham and sardines, a baked Camembert with rustic bread and onion marmalade, Greek mezze of taramasalata with humus, tzatziki, feta and flatbread, or a pizzette with garlic, rocket and Parmesan.
Amongst the starters, there is soup of the day, smoked ham with poached egg and muffin, chicken liver parfait, crayfish and salmon ravioli or caramelised onion tart. Look, too, for Black Pearl scallops when the market is right. The salads offer tandoori chicken with spinach, mango, cucumber and mint, for the seafood fiends some seared salmon Caesar with marinated anchovies and parmesan or roasted squash, goats cheese, cherry tomato and rocket.
These days no self-respecting gastropub can afford to be without its pizza range; expect to find a classic margherita of tomato, mozzarella and basil, another with pepperoni, chorizo and jalapeno or the delicious duck, plum sauce and spring onion option.
The grills for hearty eaters are worth trying and choices include pork chops and salmon among others. These are all served with frites, garlic butter, brandy peppercorn sauce, béarnaise, burnt tomato and onion salsa or mango and chilli. For the big event there is always a fish of the day on request.
The steak burger with cheese, onion and mustard mayo is popular, a sign of the times and improving taste in eating. There is lovely rack of lamb with chorizo as well as venison and wild mushroom or the creamy risotto.
A wide range of supporting dishes includes baby potatoes, Belgium frites and mayo, and greens, leeks and peas. For desserts resort to the blackboard, where there is always a good display, often with some of the local cheeses to set the buffs alight.
For anybody looking for privacy, they also have the 'Warwick Suite' where you can book dinners for up to 60, have a meeting, or consider holding your wedding breakfast, perhaps getting married there since they are licensed for civil ceremonies?
Either call the General Manager to discuss your personal requirements or perhaps arrange a visit. More information, including full menus, is available on their Website. Please note that the E-Mail Contact is for enquiries only, not for bookings.
Your Reviews of Saxon Mill, The
Karen (14 October 2008)
I spent a fabulous Sunday afternoon at the Saxon Mill with a group of friends, our kids and our dogs, a few weeks ago. The surroundings are amazing; we walked there over the fields from Leamington Spa, and sat outside overlooking the river. Most of us just wanted soup, and chips, or a mix of things, which was absolutely fine with the staff. The food was lovely, and the service was friendly, and faultless. We had such a great day that none of us wanted to leave at the end of it. I would highly recommend the Saxon Mill.

We spent the Bank Holiday weekend in Warwick and Stratford so decided to book a table at The Saxon Mill after seeing the reviews on this website and I'm glad we did as it was a lovely evening. The setting was lovely; the historical building itself is set next to the river with a contemporary touch. On arrival we were greeted warmly by the bar staff after explaining that we were late for our booking, not from the area so it took us a little longer to find, which they were fine about. We were shown to our table and the service was quick, efficient and very friendly to my husband, me and our seven year old daughter. The food was very good. Even though they don't have a children’s menu they were happy to do a child's portion for a reasonable price. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very lively and pleasant. All in all, it was a very nice meal and if we are ever in Warwick or Stratford again we will be returning. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
