Sheldrakes Restaurant Description

The spectacular views alone make this Wirral gem worthy of a visit. But Sheldrakes Restaurant located on the banks of the River Dee in Lower Heswall, doesn't just rely on visual appeal to draw in the crowd, although the Dee estuary against a backcloth of the Welsh mountains does afford some magnificent sights. This warm and cosy retreat is a true find, with its delightful outdoor seating and charming combination of rustic and contemporary chic inside, perfect for an intimate dinner, long lunches with friends or just a simple meal.

Menus display a Mediterranean influence which pleasantly touches upon the atmosphere as well, so expect starters of lightly fried salmon and haddock fillets with king prawns and aioli dip, a main course of roasted loin of pork served with char grilled pineapple, honey roasted peppers and sweet and sour sauce. The dessert of fig tart tatin served with pistachio ice cream strikes the right notes and the wine list at Sheldrakes is from Tanners, the renowned Shrewsbury wine merchants, featuring individually sourced wines from across the globe.

Fixed Lunch

  • £14.95 (4 course carvery), Sun, 12 - 5 pm

If you want to find fine food served in a beautiful location, this is the place. The food is well-prepared and the service, first class, the tables are broad and there is no cramped elbows in at you sides feeling as the tables are wide. The light from the West streams through the lovely large windows and the world is a lovely place when you eat here. The seating is a mixture of comfortable sofas and chairs it is not heavily themed but casually mixed, it has a strong homely feel. We moved from the Wirral but this is the best place to enjoy good food and good company on the Wirral I believe. If you like the Dee this is the place to go.

I am personally delighted by the honest, down to earth, yet still professional and near perfect, service and food at Sheldrakes.

My Dad had his second marriage there over a year ago and it was unanimous, from the customer service to the food (that was prepared for many guests arriving on time and exquisite) that every single person had had an enjoyable afternoon and evening. In fact, from what my dad and his wife's friends' saw, another couple chose to get married there just this year!

I personally know Alan and the owner Helen themselves, and I can say they are truly pleasant people with excellent restaurant management skills. I return regularly whenever I can and am yet to find something wrong there. An idyllic, calm and romantic setting, with fantastic food and drinks. One of the few nice places to eat on the Wirral for a genuine and reasonable price.

However, as a vegetarian I have expressed concern for the lack of options sometimes available on the menu. BUT, being the type of restaurant they are, have acknowledged this and even said the chef will alter any choice of mine to a vegetarian one. They even asked for any suggestions of other meals!
