Ship in Distress, The Description
If you wish to learn how to transform a fast-sinking old boozer into a lively, popular and much loved local take a trip to Mudeford, drop anchor alongside The Ship, and ask for Sally Canning.
Crammed full of cheerful people surrounded by nauticilia The Ship's turnaround was achieved very much on the back of its attitude to decent food, centred almost entirely on the fruits of the nearby sea with the odd concession to those who must have their meat. At one stage of the recovery customers were even being invited to bring their own sandwiches or takeaways to eat on board, but there is certainly no need for that now.
In the restaurant start with Breton fish style soup, grilled Brixham scallops, or delicious brochette with crab and spring onions glazed with gruyère cheese. What follows is always a bit subject to wind and weather, but think in terms of baked fillet of turbot with shallots, lemon sole filled with crab on Tuscan style beans, or a fresh Mudeford lobster salad served with new potatoes.
Follow up with one of the wide selection of fresh homemade desserts, say date and apple cake with green apple ice cream, banana tart tatin with coconut ice cream, or mixed berry Bakewell tart with clotted cream.
Freshness, generosity of helpings, all amidst wonderful atmosphere just about summarises the qualities of this excellent vessel, now pursuing a steady course with a happy crew and overjoyed passengers.

A lovely experience, really excellent food and friendly service. I started with fish soup, which was served piping hot and was really tasty. For mains I had roast cod wrapped in parma ham, and this unusual combination worked really well. To finish, I had to try the sticky toffee pudding and was not disappointed. My companion had potted prawns, a little unusual and very enjoyable. For her main she opted for a simple whole lemon sole cooked to perfection.
In Christchuech we are spoiled for choice for restaurants, with some really great places opening over the last year. The Ship in Distress stacks up against the best of them, and is well woth a visit.

This place was a real find. We received a warm welcome into a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere. The members of staff who were friendly and attentive with no hint of stuffiness, added to our enjoyment. I had the two course fixed price lunch; the fish was as fresh as I've eaten anywhere in the world. It was cooked to perfection, to my taste, and I couldn't find fault with anything that went with it either. The tables were well set with clean cutlery and glasses. Yes, I know they should be, but how often they are not. Add to this a nice glass of wine, which I didn’t feel robbed in paying for, and it all added up to a great meal. It reflects well alongside some of the celebrity chef restaurants I’ve eaten in. Having tasted the set menu, I now want to return to investigate what else they have to offer.
