A carefully preserved village pub, where the owners, the Herberts, have had the wit to realise that you don't change what is not broken, thereby laying claim to what must be one of the most perfect pubs in the country.

Thatched roofs, interesting interiors paying due homage to the passing river and a summer barbecue that operates outside except in the most desperate conditions, a good mix of boaties, locals and others all mingling comfortably together.

The menu is subject to the whims of the host who can be relied upon to come up with something that pleases from a repertoire that embraces Thai, Indian or Spanish This can include lobster, crab, steaks, fresh monkfish marinated in lime, chilli, garlic and coriander, well supported by 40 or so wines, all at prices that will bring a smile to your face.

Afterwards cross the water by ferry and visit one of Cornwall's finest gardens, Trebah. To say it is in the top 80 UK gardens is a gross understatement in my view.
