Siam Cafe

103 Woodgrange Road, Forest Gate, London, E7 0EP

For great value Thai food the Siam Café is hard to beat. The décor is simple to say the least and during the day it's a traditional café serving vast quantities of English breakfasts. The evening menu though is something else entirely. Crispy wonton and succulent steamed dumplings are so light you just want to keep eating them. Main course red and green curries, noodles and stir-fries are all equally delicious and you can bring your own booze to keep costs to a minimum, making the Siam Café great value for money.

REVIEWS OF Siam Cafe

Jane Williams (17 June 2009)

Siam Cafe is a total gem. I thought about not telling anyone about it, because I want to make sure I always get a table, but I really think it deserves all the business it can get because it is fabulous, family run, and friendly. Don't worry about the less than promising exterior - the one-storey Siam Cafe sits next to a kebab shop - when you get in to the basic one room dining area you will be warmed by the friendly service and the unpretentious relaxed atmosphere. The lack of a license is no real problem as there is an off-license just across the road and that actually means you have more choice of what to drink with your meal. Our family are regulars here and we have never been disappointed. And, trust me, my survey of their consistency has been thorough as both times I was pregnant my cravings were for Siam food. Let's just say I have eaten there a lot! The red and green curries are second to none and the soups are great. The Tom ka is fresh and zingy like nothing else. Being vegetarian, I can say that nobody cooks tofu like Siam, so I always ask for extra in my veggie green curry! And despite asking for very detailed tips on cooking it at home, I have never come close! The one problem I do have is that whenever I go to a more expensive and swanky Thai restaurant in town, I am really grumpy and disappointed that the food is not as good as in our local Siam Cafe.

As a resident of Forest Gate I'm a frequent visitor to the Siam Cafe and have never been disappointed. It's a family run business and everyone is hands on, friendly and polite but without being at all pushy. The décor is basic - it's just like sitting in a 1970's kitchen with obligatory Thai tourism posters, but the food is great. Being vegetarian the menu is slightly limited but the vegetable tempura-sprint rolls, vegetable phad thai and vegetable red and green curries are superb. We took some Indonesian friends a couple of months ago and they said the food was just like their grandmother used to make. The Cafe doesn't have an alcohol licence but bringing your own makes it an even cheaper night out. If you like no thrills, good quality Thai food, then please visit the Siam Cafe - just leave enough space for me!
