Sir Charles Napier, The Description

An unusual old flint and red-brick inn with a distinctly rural air of mild eccentricity; this place was setting trends some thirty five years ago in pub food standards, where many others have followed since. Add to this the warmth of the welcome and the breadth of a menu which calls heavily upon the surrounding countryside and you have sheer perfection, particularly if you have nothing too much to do on a warm, summer's afternoon. There are certain features that you can always rely on, whole Cornish lobster in the summer, and in winter you will find game from local shoots: from roast wild mallard with winter vegetables to partridge with red cabbage or woodcock with braised endive. You could conduct a safari through the brilliant wine list with house wine from £12.95 or more exotic offerings at rather more money but about ten times the pleasure.

Your Reviews of Sir Charles Napier, The

Andy Nichols (5 December 2007)

Having read some of the reviews below, I was a bit apprehensive about going back to the Sir Charles Napier but we have just had a lovely meal there. The fires and the big sofas give a great welcome and we could not fault the food and the service. The soufflés are incredible and well worth the 20 minute that they tell you they will take to come. There is wonderful sculpture everywhere and even the loos are great with Piranesi prints of ancient Rome on the wall. We would certainly go back and would like to try out the garden in summer.

Kaye Griffiths (26 November 2007)

I started going to the Napier in around 1966 when it was just a beer house, since then it has got posh. I would very much like to hear from anyone who may have enjoyed the early years or should I say fun years as I am writing the story of those early times.
