Restaurants come and go but Skippers is one of those that seems to go on for ever. Perhaps its secret is that it's not so easy to find in its Leith waterfront location, but whatever it has been doing in its 25 years of existence has certainly appealed to the punters who turn up in large and regular droves, yes, even on a Monday.

Granted that seafood is a way of life to many and the way it is prepared and served here is exemplarary. There is nothing notable about the furnishings which are plain, indeed the hanging impedimenta brings more atmosphere, so perhaps it's the undemanding, understated experience of people enjoying themselves in homely surroundings, eating some of the best seafood-based meals in Edinburgh, that works.

That great standby, fish soup, is always popular and amongst the more unusual offering might be crab and mussel risotto. The wine list recognises a mainly seafood menu and prices are easy on the wallet, with house wine from £10.50.
