The name of Alexis Soyer will be familiar to culinary historians. A Victorian chef of considerable renown, the restaurant is dedicated to him and an impressive array of historic cookbooks lends even more credibility to a kitchen, which, rather surprisingly offers a mainly modern repertoire. Certainly the gently laid back aura which surrounds this attractive house above the Torridge river extends to all departments, creating a setting worthy of some serious relaxation. House wine at £13.
