Spice 1 Description

Spice 1 is an Indian restaurant situated in South Shields and has been established since late 2003. It attracts customers from all over the North East, they boast that their list of patrons even includes Rt Hon David Miliband MP - not sure that I would be quite so proud of that!

The décor is luxuriously warm with its vibrant colours and evokes Indian culture with decorated pieces and ornamental items including a painting, which adorns the back wall, surrounded by a fountain and high arched frame.

The main restaurant floor is very spacious and looks even more so with its high arched ceiling complemented by a gold plated chandelier. As soon as you enter the restaurant you are welcomed into a chic, modern and yet contemporary bar area, which contrasts with the rest of the restaurant décor.

The menu offers all the classical dishes you would find throughout India and these are served alongside more contemporary creations; the selection is huge with each dish explained clearly.

It is one of the biggest Indian restaurants in the North East and on the main floor it covers eighty seats and boasts a private function room, which can seat around twenty seven people.

A praiseworthy point - the place is also easily accessed by people with disabilities, with a ramp to enter the building, widely spaced tables and disabled toilets.

Your Reviews of Spice 1

Mike Smith (17 September 2007)

Wow! After visiting Spice 1, I have realised what Indian food really is. The restaurant was really the best in South Shields. The decor, staff and food, all were just out of the world. I had visited the restaurant twice and was amazed that the manager Shah recognised me from my first visit, and he even remembered what I had ordered. That says a lot, for someone to remember one customer out of the hundreds they must serve every week. Due to the restaurant being packed, even though it was only a Wednesday night, and me not booking, I waited a couple of minutes at the bar. I guess I will book next time, but it truly is the best you could get when it comes to Indian food.

Well what can I say! When you look from the outside of the restaurant you think you will be walking into a very small restaurant. However, when you enter the building it surprises you! The decor of the restaurant is magnifique! It is elegant and very contemporary. With its high arched ceiling and gold chandelier it provides a very warm and nice environment.

The food is outstanding - the service is impeccable. It is a restaurant run by Shah and his four brothers. They provide excellent customer service and I think they have done a magnificent job in the four years they have been open.

I would recommend this restaurant for any occasion, whether it is a weekly curry or a special occasion. They make your night special, whatever the occasion, but crucially they provide you with an experience, as they put it.

I would say it the best restaurant by far in South Shields, and is up there amongst the best in the North East.
