Spooners Restaurant Description

spooners restaurant woburnSpooners Restaurant was established in 1984 and became an instant success. It continues to be supported by a loyal clientele, many of whom were the original patrons. Recognised for the consistently high quality of its fresh food, well stocked cellar, friendly service and intimate atmosphere, it is a favourite destination for special occasions, parties and weddings.

Spooners will continue to maintain the current high quality menu with its popular signature dish of Henry Marshall. Now I am still not too sure who Henry was, but any man who has a Scottish Caledonian fillet steak named after him can't be all bad. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it is also flamed in brandy with mushrooms, onions and double cream. On balance I am disinclined to believe he was into hypnotherapy, made tractors and came from a very boring town in England, which is what the search engine suggests, but I could be wrong.

Spooners Restaurant has now added a number of new and exciting Russian twists to the menu. Recent customers have complimented them on the new dishes specially prepared by Liudmila and head chef, Vitaly.

Some eight or so starter courses yield a rich harvest of old favourites nicely blended with modern touches. A tossed salad of blue stilton, toasted pecans, poached pear and walnut dressing puts down a marker for the English, but Siberian influences are not far behind with homemade beef and pork ravioli served with sour cream under the title of Siberian Palmeny. One of the new dishes is Russian hunter salad made from smoked venison, roasted sweet peppers and green beans, but the dish that will intrigue many is Keta salmon caviar served on crushed ice base with traditional Russian pancakes.

Another addition to the menu is Russian hot pot, exactly what you might expect, a tender pork fillet in aromatic jus, served in a traditional Russian clay pot; a sort of Siberian tagine? Keep an eye open for the special fish dish of the day. No surprise to discover that beef stroganoff, the traditional tender strips of beef fillet sautéed, in sour cream and onion sauce, then served with rice, is also to be found.

Glad to relate the cheese board, always a masterpiece at Spooners, has survived with well-kept and interesting contributions such as Butlers Secret Cheddar, French brie and stilton. For those who consider no meal complete without a sweet conclusion, a steamed syrup and orange pudding with custard; the swan lake, a house speciality, which is topped with strawberries and passion fruit, or traditional Russian cheesecake, served warm, with sweet sour cream, should cut the mustard.

Spooners is an excellent venue for the smaller wedding, luncheon or evening party. They are able to adapt the restaurant to suit your needs. The upstairs restaurant seats 38 and the ground floor restaurant can take 14. Cakes, flowers, taxis, entertainers can all be arranged on behalf of the client.

Your Reviews of Spooners Restaurant

Ian Williams (25 September 2009)

I have visited Spooners Restaurant three times in as many months and each visit has been a gastronomic treat. The select menu offers beautifully balanced food with something for all tastes and the Russian influence of the dishes has delighted my taste buds on every occasion. But it’s not just the food that I found appealing, for me the whole dining experience has to be right and the staff tried in every way to make sure everything was just so. I would give full marks to Spooners for hitting the mark on every occasion. I would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to anyone who enjoys excellent food in friendly intimate surroundings; with hosts Mili and Ray, who go the extra mile to make your evening just that little bit special.

David Middleton (12 August 2009)

Spooners has a very international menu, with a variety of delicious dishes from the exotic and fabulous steaks to fish, but for ex-aficionados of Luba's Bistro off Brompton Road in the '60s and '70s, the stars of Liudmila's menu are her Russian dishes, including a caviar and smoked salmon blini starter, the can’t be missed hotpots, and the sculpted ‘Swan Lake’ pavlova. The atmosphere is intimate and friendly, with hostess Mili herself prepared to sit and chat if encouraged by the many friends of her little restaurant. The sea food, Russian and other event evenings are always a sell-out, so book early for those. Try lunch too, especially on Sundays, when prices are very reasonable.
