Spread Eagle
Sawley, nr Clitheroe, BB7 4NH
The Spread Eagle is a delightful 18th century coaching inn situated in the village of Sawley in the heart of the Ribble Valley. The inn's comfortable rooms provide beautiful views of the valley and some guests visit the place simply to relax over tasty food and wine and traditional afternoon teas; others take advantage of the surroundings wooded areas by going on riverside walks. The dining areas give visitors a chance to have light dishes such as corned beef hash cake and homemade soup, sandwiches, platters of cured meats, or full meals complemented by a range of hand pulled ales and wine. Main courses take in thick sliced honey roast ham with bubble and squeak, grilled double pork chop with apple puree and buttered greens, and pan-seared fillet of sea bass with roasted basil, cherry tomatoes, roast root vegetables and pan gravy. The Spread Eagle is a delightful 18th century coaching inn situated in the village of Sawley in the heart of the Ribble Valley. A tempting warm chocolate brownie or stewed apple and almond tart with star anise, crème anglaise and plum sauce helps bring a pleasant end to proceedings.

REVIEWS OF Spread Eagle
J Veach (12 November 2008)
At the end of October we had lunch there for the first time since its unexpected change of management. Gone is the homely, traditional English country inn with its open log fire, which is now enclosed, to be replaced by the standard city taste for bare floors and assorted bare tables in the bar area.
The restaurant is decorated tastefully, and the large picture windows looking onto spectacular views of river and hills have been replaced by small period frames, which restrict the views. The food is of very good quality, but the portions are small and vegetables are extra. Our fish portions - bream, if I remember correctly - were of very unequal sizes, but the chicory was delicious. Coffee and service was very good, though we were not offered a wine list so we ordered no wine. Had we never visited the restaurant before, we would probably have enjoyed our experience more, but as it is we missed the cosy, busy, good-natured atmosphere and we shall not be returning.

We have dined at the Spread Eagle a number of times over the past few years and this times visit was just so special. As always the food was superb and well presented - the staff and the service impeccable and we think think this high quality comes at reasonable cost. Highly recommended and we will return!
