Sree Krishna
192-194 Tooting High Street, London, SW17 0SF
One of two wonderful Indian restaurants in the South London Borough of Tooting (see Kastoori), even if you find that not many people actually go to Sree Krishna for the service or the atmosphere, whilst the décor, whilst quite smart of its style, also fails to impress. However, the reason that it is always absolutely packed is, very simply, the amazing Indian food at incredible value-for-money prices. Devotees are constantly astounded at how they can do it, as time after time they are served fantastic meals at a cost that puts most Central London restaurants to shame. Devotees are constantly astounded at how they can do it, as time after time they are served fantastic meals at a cost that puts most Central London restaurants to shame. Witness starters like Bonda (£2.50), fried Potato Croquettes spiced with ginger and curry leaves or Uthappam (£4.50), a South Indian version of Pizza with a topping of chopped onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves and green chillies, with sambar and coconut chutney.
They specialise in numerous vegetable curries, mostly around £2.50, like Chana Masala, chickpeas with an array of spices, a medium hot one, or Bhindi Curry, fresh okra cooked with tomato, onion and selected spices. But they also have more normal offerings, Chicken Jalfrezi (£6.95), for instance, oven cooked chicken with nuts and capsicum in a tomato based sauce or Cochin King Prawn Fry, at the same price, King prawns marinated in spices and stir-fried with fresh coconut.
Sree Krishna is actually the oldest South Indian Restaurant in South London, established in 1973. It reflects a wide variety of tantalising and exotic delicacies specially researched by them from the Malabar coast, Hot Madras, Spicy Chettinadu and Karaikkudi regions. Their experienced chefs hail from some of the most popular and upmarket restaurants in Southern India, and their cuisine mainly originates from Kerala, known as the spice capital of the world. It is a multi-faith region, which is also reflected in a wide variety of cooking and a tradition of healthy eating.
Unfortunately the downside of visiting Sree Krishna is that you will have to venture all the way out to Tooting to experience this gastronomic miracle; but once you get there you will find out why its many fans have voted it the best curry house in South London, by a wide margin!!
