St Andrews Street Bistro Description
There is more than a slight association between St Ives and Bohemia, thanks mainly to artistic influences, and now it is extending its influence through the food chain. Chef Proprietor Robert Armstrong serves mainly local food with inspired twists and additions that really pull in the gourmets.
The surroundings are an eclectic mix of art nouveau meets gastro louche that clearly impresses the tourists and locals alike, and the menu takes much the same line. The menu is displayed on a vast blackboard in true bistro style, and mingles well with the candles and mismatched furniture.
Fillets of red mullet arrive in the company of crushed spuds and roast tomatoes with dragoncello sauce. Grilled Merguez sausage with lentils, roast pumpkin and harissa makes a welcome change from the sometimes slightly overworked sausages in onion gravy with mashed tatties.
There's a good range of vegetarian options, such as goat's cheese and piquillo pepper lasagne, and flat breads with dips. A small but well chosen wine list swings well with the food. Try and locate an upstairs table where the views are better and the atmosphere quieter.

Andy Hardy (29 August 2008)
My wife, I and our two teenaged daughters had a fabulous meal and enjoyed the Bohemian atmosphere. We all enjoyed every dish and with one of us being vegetarian and the rest of us no less picky, I can't think of the last time that has happened. Standout starters included the wonderful black bean hummus, and excellent prawns in a tomato-y sauce. All four mains deserve a mention as well: two of us had the sublime peanut curry, Caribbean I presume, but reminded me a lot of the flavours of travels in Indonesia, some excellent salmon and bream, which was so good. With wine and scrummy desserts, the whole meal cost us one-third of the cost of a meal in another restaurant in Watergate Bay the week before, which we loved, but was much better than only one-third as good. I'd say St. Andrew's was much better value. Looking forward to our next visit to Cornwall - we'll be back.

This is about the nicest restaurants I've eaten in in the UK, and I eat out a lot. The food is lovely, sort of European with a bit of North African, generous portions, and wine by the jug, which is great if you're dining alone, as I was. The atmosphere's relaxed and friendly. Although I was on my own I was made just as welcome as if I'd been a party of ten. I'm going back to St Ives soon and one of the highlights will be eating here again. Do book in advance - they get busy. Can't recommend it enough.
