St Kew Inn

St Kew, Bodmin, PL30 3HB

This splendid inn has been taken over by a former barrister and his wife, who hails from a family with serious experience of running pubs, so between them the landscape is changing and St Kew Inn is gently adapting to the times, a ticklish business that involves keeping everybody contented. The food is good sturdy, mainly local stuff, with steaks that would do justice to a sound London steakhouse, and then some.  As well as a wine list of some distinction - but what else would one expect from a man of the law - there are local beers for which people are known to travel many miles to savour. St Austell comes from wooden barrels that give an extra flavour to the brew, and Hicks Special Draught has a rich, dark reputation.

With Cornwall becoming ever more popular, places like the St Kew Inn could become havens of a new approach in the county that retains the best of the old whilst encouraging fresh attitudes that blend in naturally with the fine traditions of this very independent part of the world.

REVIEWS OF St Kew Inn

Brian Parsons (16 August 2010)

I went with my family to have dinner at this pub and it was really very good. You don't need to book to eat in the bar but because our grandchildren were under 14 we had to eat under the awning outside which was no problem because it has a heater. Childrens' menu and food was excellent, so too were our beef burgers; my wife had splendid haddock and chips and my daughter had duck breast. Pint of prawns to start, a bottle of wine, four pints and soft drinks for the kids; bill for 6 was £93, brilliant. Shame Paul Ripley has left but this chef can cook too! Very busy, doesn't open until 6.00PM and food cannot be ordered until 6.30PM. Lovely staff and excellent service.

Hugo Woolley (23 March 2009)

This is just the best pub food you will get in Cornwall. North Cornish pubs are sadly very poor at food, but it has all changed with this lovely, well thought out menu, with English dishes, with a new slant to them, presented in a modern yet traditional way. You get a Ploughman’s but with homemade pickles and caper berries, order a duck and you will get confit of duck as good or better than the south of France. Good wine list as well as a good pint of Tinners. Very good value, wonderful food, lots of old-world character - the Americans will love it - and very popular with the locals as well as the tourists. You have to book.
