St Moritz Restaurant
161 Wardour Street, London, W1V 3TA
This modest eatery in the popular restaurant area of Soho's Wardour Street is unmistakably Swiss as the décor will soon tell you. One the menu there is great choice of flavours from the many soups, pasta, meat, fish and vegetarian dishes on offer. However, the thing that many diners choose St Moritz for is the selection of fondues, such as Gruyere and Emmenthal, or even a chocolate fondue. Other specialities of the house include veal with a cream and mushroom sauce, or slices of beef cooked with gherkins, peppers, onions and cream. Desserts are well made but the traditional Swiss cheese platter is hard to beat. Reviewed by Linda ButtleCentral European, East European, Swiss

I agree that the décor is a little special and adds a certain degree of charm to the place, but the service, quality of food and price let it down massively. Firstly, the members of staff are pushy and, if you are in a group, they do that old trick of adding extra portions onto your order, even though you didn't ask for them, nor do you have room to eat them. Also, during our visit, the members of staff weren't that friendly and, as a result, we decided not to leave the full 12.5% service charge that had been added to the bill. It clearly stated on the bill that it was ‘optional’, so we left probably around 7% of the total bill. On leaving, one of the ‘friendly’ waitresses bullied one of our group, the last one to leave the restaurant, into coughing up the rest of the 12.5% service charge - they were not aware that it was marked as ‘optional’ on the receipt. This soured the whole evening, more so than the very average, and yet over-priced, tasting food. I had bratwurst from the specialities menu. It was a large sausage, which tasted okay, in onion gravy – dull. There are so many nicer places to eat in the area, so I urge you all to avoid this place.

St Moritz was a restaurant I’ve wanted to try for some time. I love the food when I travel to Switzerland, and it had been recommended by several friends and colleagues. The first impressions were great, it has a fantastic atmosphere and the smell of cheese is everywhere. It all sounds good so far, but sadly by the end of the meal I was overall disappointed and frustrated. My partner ordered the escargot, it was great and if you like it, I would definitely recommend it. As a starter, I ordered the Swiss sausage, which was £7 for a collection of run of the mill meats that came out of a pre-packaged deli; very disappointing! We decided to go for the cheese fondue as I love fondue, and got the standard house variety with bread. Somehow, and I wish I had caught this early; they get away with charging £13 per head. We had one beer between us and our total was £60, way too expensive for the quantity and quality of food we had. Would I go again? Only if I was taking clients and I could charge it. It’s time for London restaurants to step up their game. London is a global capital and as patrons we have been way too tolerant with poor service, mediocre food and exorbitant prices. St Moritz, cheese is not that expensive; take a look at your pricing structure so that you can enjoy repeat business.
