Stables Bar Restaurant Description
Built in 1714 in the days when Bishops expected to be accommodated in nothing less than a palace, Soughton has come down over the years as home to many famous and distinguished people.
It is a truly imposing building which must have made Archbishops wonder if they'd got it quite right. Surrounded by 150 acres of superb grounds, 15 minutes from the centre of Chester it is beautifully furnished and well deserves the appellation of luxury hotel.
There is nothing ancient about the approach to the cooking which is very up to date, well-presented and exceptionally good value. Since they have a wine shop within the complex it comes as no surprise to find that the list reflects a wide and mature attention to detail. House wine at £9.95.

Having eaten at this restaurant several times in the past, this has been at the top of my list for special occasions. I felt sad during my last visit, however, as those things which set this restaurant apart are now missing. The choice of wine, which was varied and outstanding, is now narrowed to new world wines and quite shockingly, overpriced classics. The whole ‘mid price’ section has been removed. The service used to be attentive and this made customers feel special, but not any more. Different staff served us that evening and I think the front of house can be managed better. The difference from a year ago is striking, although the food is still exceptional. I will think twice before rebooking as I had to commute an hour to get there and I found it disappointing.
