Star Inn Description

The restaurant at the Star Inn is situated upstairs in the oldest part of the building; it has a 'barrelled' ceiling and was originally built in 1348 as the dormitory for the stone masons who built the church. The restaurant has recently been fitted with 'climate control' and seats 45 approximately. This room can be let privately for lunch or dinner and small functions such as weddings, funerals and christenings.

The food ranges from traditional bar food to gourmet, Hastings 'beer batter' cod and chips, ploughman's lunches, mussels cooked in white wine, garlic and onions with thick crusty bread, fresh dressed lobster served cold or hot as thermidor, half shoulder of lamb, cooked slow until tender served with minted redcurrant gravy, pan fried smoked salmon fillet, marinated with brandy honey and dill and a 'proper' short crust homemade beef, ale and potato or chicken leek and mushroom pie.

Least expensive price is half pint of prawns with crusty bread and homemade marie rose dip, and the most is a 10oz Scottish sirloin with brandy cream and Madagascan green pepper sauce, tomato and onion salad and chips at £15.95. The menu is the same throughout the pub and the all the food is prepared fresh on the premises and served in substantial portions; all the salads are dressed with their own homemade secret dressing.

The Good Pub Guide 2004 commented: "The L shaped bar has a relaxed chatty atmosphere, a fine log fire in the inglenook fireplace, with panelling and built in wall settles. The tables are candlelit at night, chalked up on boards, there is a decent choice of bar food. The beer is well kept and they do a mean Bloody Mary and hold an extensive and well thought out wine list. Classical piped music and bar billiards. The prettily planted sloping garden with its rustic furniture has lovely views of rolling oak lined sheep pastures. Turner thought it fine enough to paint."

Meals are served throughout the pub, not just upstairs, and it is open during normal pub hours for drinks; the hours given apply to the service of food.

Your Reviews of Star Inn

Carlton (7 August 2007)

I have been eating at this restaurant for the past eight years and have always looked forward to our visits. Tonight when I ate there, (I presume under new management) the food was terrible. Our meal took an hour to arrive, my lamb dish was cold, the vegetables mushy and overcooked. The menu was extremely limited, and many items on the menu were 'off' (on a Wednesday night!). My wife ordered profiteroles - five tasteless blobs on a plate. I ordered cheese - and was given a 'half price' version as they could only offer me a small selection. A £90 meal for four was awful. Goodbye fond memories of 'The Star Inn'.

Tasha (15 February 2007)

When visiting the Star Inn Pub on Valentines Day 2007, I was very impressed. The restaurant was very clean and comfortable, and the food was fresh, well prepared and served promptly. The prices were not over the top and the food was of a good serving size and well worth the money. The main course I enjoyed more than that at the Grand Hotel and I felt that I was able to relax. It was a great evening, I will be going back.
