Sticky Prawn, The

The coasts of Britain abound in quirky waterfront restaurants, but The Sticky Prawn is special. Fronting on to Falmouth Bay, but very conscious of its relationship with the village of Flushing, it is claimed that the prawns from this side of the bay are more succulent, juicy and sweet than others.

Owned and run by father and son team, Paul and Ben, the entire menu is changed twice a year, with changes of dishes every day to suit availability. Inside the old shed, formerly used as resting rooms for onshore sailors, are small cosy dining alcoves on one side, and tables for 6 on the other.

From a menu that is redolent of local produce expect to find a soup of the day, normally a fish chowder sort of brew, a magnificent local crab and jumbo prawn cocktail topped off with a poached crevette, or their own terrine of local pheasant and pigeon with toasted cranberry brioche and home-made piccalilli.

Main courses? Well, what better than some braised oxtail creppenette served with horseradish mash and a few onion and thyme fritters? Possibly a char-grilled fillet of Cornish beef topped with a caramelized onion compote and Devon blue cheese, or a baked leek and Menallack cheddar pudding served with red pepper dressing and a grain mustard cream. For puddings keep an eye open for rhubarb and gingernut biscuit crumble, topped with stem ginger ice cream.

The wine list is Paul's part of ship, for which purpose he connives with a local wine merchant to produce unusual and interesting contributions from the world over, bottles that provide a real talking point amongst the cognoscenti, mostly within a £20 range.
