Stonhouse, The

One of a small group of carefully selected restaurants in London that seem to be hitting the right note, this one comes in gastropub form with a menu that has something for everyone.

Starters of Manuka smoked salmon pate, eggs Benedict or Italian antipasta set the scene. Argentinean steaks are served with béarnaise and either salad, mash or fries, or try an ostrich fillet, a dense dark meat not unlike venison for those not in the know. The fish pie of salmon, prawns and haddock is made the way it should be with a good topping. Amongst the daily specials watch out on Thursdays for the veal involtini.

Traditional salads include a niçoise, with plenty of side orders, notably steamed vegetables for the health conscious, followed by a selection of puddings several of which are definitely for the health unconscious, even if you do take the Neal's Yard cheese selection as a sort of hostage to fortune.

The Stonhouse is a place for hearty eating, well supported by a list of cocktails that will set the world to rights. The wine list contains an excellent choice with a good selection by the glass, and prices that will not deter you from that second bottle.
