Sundial Restaurant

Gardner Street, Herstmonceux, nr Hailsham, BN27 4LA

A cottage restaurant perched in the middle of Herstmonceux with a French chef who does interesting things with indigenous produce, be it ostrich or the local ducks, whilst at the same time cherishing a healthy regard for his roots. The latter is certainly carried through to the wine list, which is unashamedly Gallic and very challenging. House wine at £14.95.

REVIEWS OF Sundial Restaurant

John Small (26 January 2010)

The Sundial is one of the most consistently good restaurants in the Sussex area. I took my family to The Sundial for our 30th wedding anniversary and our children were pleasantly surprised to receive such fine dining, tucked away in the Sussex countryside. The tiger prawn kebab with stir fried vegetables was a big favourite on the starters and the main course of ‘duck trilogy’ which consisted of duck medallion, drumstick and pan fried foie gras all served with their individual sauces was more than a real treat. I can definitely recommend the cheese tray if you are a cheese fan but their chocolate dessert is also scrumptious! The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented and there were generous portions. The service was the best I have ever received - attentive yet unobtrusive, accommodating to any request, very professional and friendly. We went on a Thursday night and it wasn't particularly busy. I think this place is great value for money and I would definitely go again. They really delivered the goods on what was an important family occasion.

Double Scorpio (11 October 2008)

We ate recently for the first time at the Sundial. The food itself was excellent. It should be for the prices charged, but the service was painfully slow, even though the restaurant was less than half full. When we arrive, and are seated in the bar area with a pre-dinner drinks menu to peruse, you should not have to wait so long that you find it necessary to summon someone to take your order. Also, we were asked to order desserts at the same time as the starters and main dishes. This is a silly practice, as, unless you are familiar with the restaurant and the size of portions offered, you have no way of knowing if you will be able to accommodate that much. These gripes apart, we would probably return for the sheer quality of the food, not to mention the generosity of the portions.
