Sundial Restaurant Description
A cottage restaurant perched in the middle of Herstmonceux with a French chef who does interesting things with indigenous produce, be it ostrich or the local ducks, whilst at the same time cherishing a healthy regard for his roots. The latter is certainly carried through to the wine list, which is unashamedly Gallic and very challenging. House wine at £13.25.

The Sundial is run by Vincent and Mary, a husband and wife team. Vincent is my kind of chef who is constantly exploring new combinations and fusions of food. He is passionate about his creations. Dining at Sundial is a truly sensual, ambient and relaxing experience. The beamed dining room, the linen covered tables with different and unusual flower arrangements as well as the stylish crockery are an aesthetic support for the food, which is one of the stars of the show. The other star is the service headed by Vincent's wife Mary, is attentive yet unobtrusive, subtly friendly and very generous. The amuse-gueule tasters that appear before and throughout the meal are a delight. The surprise delight may be a taster of crayfish mousse or an out of this world creamy gazpacho or a champagne sorbet.
Vincent is a truly creative a chef who has a gift to blend new with old. He once invited me into the kitchen to taste a new soup he'd created - it was Thai based. When he shared with me the ingredients, I realised what true food creativity is. I was in the presence of greatness. Even the most demanding gourmet will not be disappointed there. At regular intervals during the year Sundial offers a buffet, which includes a vast selection of delicious appetisers, roast, pasta and a variety of vegetables. This is followed by a huge cheeseboard and homemade walnut bread and for dessert you can have a mixture of over fifteen different offerings from crème brûlée, to trifles, chocolate mousses, pastries, tortes, crepe suzettes. You may not want to eat for a day after this buffet - sheer indulgence. If you are in the East Sussex area, you don't want to miss this rich dining experience.

It’s fabulous, have now eaten at The Sundial twice, and each occasion is a splendid and memorable one. Each dish was a delight, and the staff attentive, and unobtrusive. I am certainly going there again at the earliest opportunity.
