Table, The

Not for the first time it becomes apparent that a café linked to an architectural practice can be successful. This one is on the ground floor of the offices of architects Allies and Morrison, who not unnaturally were responsible for the design.

It is all very simple and straightforward, just like it must have looked on the drawing board. The furnishings are solid without being cubist, the food, simple, not simplistic hence Time Out's Cheap Eats award in 2006. The restaurant/canteen continues to wow in terms of quality, integrity and price.

Lunch is an exceptionally busy affair, a constantly changing self service salad bar being a focal point as well as an array of locally sourced meat and fish from the char grill, adding to the choices available. To speed things along dishes such as Lancashire hot pot, aubergine parmigiano and gourmet burgers are all available on the spot.

The Table is open on Thursday and Friday evening for a far more relaxed and intimate restaurant atmosphere, with great service complementing an inventive and exceptionally well sourced menu.

There are plans to expand.
