Taiwan Village

85 Lillie Road, London, SW6 1UD

Just when you thought the watermark of Chinese restaurants had passed high tide, along comes Taiwan Village. It's not that the menu is all that different from any of the others until you stray, perhaps more by good luck than direction, on to the back page of the menu. It is almost as though there is a prize waiting for those who are possessed of a sense of curiosity, of a 'feast'. Specialising in Hunan and Szechwan cuisine there are no less than 13 courses on the feast menu, for an incredible all-in price of £21.50, or slightly more if you wish for an emphasis on seafood. So, totally hooked, here we go, starting with a light aromatic fish soup full of luscious soft chunks of white fish and Chinese herbs.

So, totally hooked, here we go, starting with a light aromatic fish soup full of luscious soft chunks of white fish and Chinese herbs. Then a plate of barely battered French beans with fried shards of garlic, chilli and spring onion, followed by the Imperial Jewels, a lettuce leaf with finely diced chicken and coriander, stir-fried and wrapped in each other. Back to the sea and fillets of fish coated in sesame in a dark sweet and sour sauce, with salt and pepper king prawns to follow before a spare rib well coated in sauce and the meat barely clinging to the bone.

Now where are we, I make that six, agreed? And so follows the lamb with three chillies, the sautéed ducks tongues, and squid with strips of celery, leading up to the crispy duck wrapped in its homemade pancakes, and so it goes on. For sheer value and excellence this is a menu that is hard to beat and my advice is to get round there (you'll find it in the hinterland behind Earl's Court) before all the world and his family descend upon this attractive new addition to the London Chinese scene.
