Thai Edge - Birmingham Description

Picking up rave reviews this addition to the ethnic scene in Birmingham is a welcome one to a genre that sometimes gives cause for concern as it proliferates at a rapid rate. It does seem as though somebody has sat down, reviewed the whole business and come up with a formula that is refreshingly new. The knick-knacks have been banished and replaced with a really cool décor of white backed with purple. East meets West in the cuisine but overall the choice of four regional and well defined variations gives ample choice (160 dishes in all). 'Express' lunches at £9.90 are exceptional value and mean exactly what they say, with a Sunday Buffet at £12.90. The old favourites are all there, but consider the Pla Poa, steamed sea bass in banana leaves with chilli and their own particular version of green curried chicken. A small wine list but very well chosen, though why not enjoy the Singha Thai beer and let the flavours do the rest. The service is exceptionally polite and warm.

Your Reviews of Thai Edge - Birmingham

Unhappy diner (11 June 2008)

We went there for my mother's birthday. The food was average and the service was pretty awful - we weren't asked if wanted anything to drink or given a wine list. We weren't asked if we wanted to order or given a choice of menu. When querying the bills we were told they don't make mistakes and pay up. We were not disputing the price but they had put two bills into one when we had asked for two separate bills as we had two separate tables.

Christopher Garner (12 January 2006)

On Sunday 30th October 2005 following a trip on the Birmingham Eye with my wife and 13 year old daughter, we thought we would try Thai, Birmingham style.

This fashionable restaurant attracted us with its high ceilings and simple uncluttered decor as did its extensive menu posted up outside.

Our starter for two, the traditional fish soup served in an earthenware bowl with a bright blue flame beneath, was to die for. King prawns in a flavoursome broth with chilli and lemon grass was deliciously moreish, spicy without being overly hot. However my daughter's spring rolls were very ordinary. Our main courses arrived, beautifully presented, my wife's mussels in a deep dish with wavy square edges and my red snapper on an oval platter with intricately carved vegetable garnish. My daughter had beef and noodles and we shared portions of both fried and sticky rice.

What a disappointment, the mussels were cold as was the dish, nearly a third were empty shells and when my wife got to the decidedly average lukewarm broth there was no mussel meat that one would expect had the meat fallen from the shells. My red snapper, completely covered in its sauce was efficiently boned but so over cooked that there was no white meat left, just skin with some dark brown flesh adhering. Hence no doubt, the careful covering with sauce, which to give credit where due, was very tasty. My fish was also lukewarm and on a cold plate. My daughter's beef noodles were also inferior to many a Chinese takeaway.

Our meal, with two Cokes and Thai beer and a bottle of quite good Thai Rose, came to just over £91. We did not stay for dessert and we shall not return.
