The Alpine Restaurant began life way back in 1969 and is a well-known landmark on the Hertfordshire and Greater London boundary. This 19th century Tudor structure still retains its characteristic warmth and the cooking embraces old school Italian with some modern touches.

The regularly changing menu is designed around seasonal produce so you may notice home rolled pheasant ravioli with parsnip mash or pappardelle with a ragoût of lamb and winter vegetables. For the main affair a fileto gioacchino - roast fillet steak topped with foie gras - comes with wild mushrooms, Madeira and black truffle gravy, and spinach and potato rösti. The dessert menu is most than just pannacotta and tiramisu, there's pear millefeuille with almond crème patisserie, amaretto ice cream and hot chocolate sauce.

A crisp Montecristo, Fantinel 2006 complements most dishes while the Planeta Cometa 2006 with its elegant mineral notes and honeyed finish could accompany well-flavoured starters.
