The Anchor & Hope
36 The Cut, Waterloo, London, SE1 8LP
The rise and rise of the gastropub is one of the culinary phenomena of our day, and well to the front of the movement is The Anchor and Hope, a south of the river haven for those who like their food without too much of the old chandelier and starched napkins routine. Business is brisk, so much so that bookings are not accepted. The wait at the bar can be extended, but it is made more comfortable by efficient staff and little dishes of what can only be described as extreme temptation. Treat these with restraint unless you have the appetite of an underfed carthorse. Amongst the dishes for which I entreat you to leave space are potato soup and foie gras, rabbit rillettes, fried guinea fowl, braised beef and celeriac, warm bacon and snail salad, sea bass with lentil and anchovy vinaigrette. The rise and rise of the gastropub is one of the culinary phenomena of our day, and well to the front of the movement is The Anchor and Hope, a south of the river haven for those who like their food without too much of the old chandelier and starched napkins routine.

Portion control seems not to have found a home at the Anchor, so Hope is a relatively unused emotion and any variations seem always to be on the generous side. This is a place for people with an appetite for the table and another for life, in which to enjoy themselves.

REVIEWS OF The Anchor & Hope
Fred Scott (18 May 2007)
Stunning! Please people, who get upset at waiting and not being able to book, get over it. The food is outstanding, and for the price you pay unbeatable. If you want to book, have nice starched napkins and no atmosphere please just head north of the river. If you prefer an amazing atmosphere, food cooked to perfection and a fantastic meal then just arrive early.

Will never go back! This restaurant has a no booking policy, which is so stupid - I arrived at 6pm to try and get a table but had to wait until after 8pm to be seated. We then had to wait until nearly 10pm for our starters to arrive. That restaurant is too busy to care about the experience individual customers are having. When I made a comment to the manager that they should start taking bookings, so people don't have to hang around so long, she said in a very rude way that it was all working very well for them ‘look how well we're doing, why should we change it?’ - because none of these people who had to go through what I have are ever going to come back and be treated like that again. The food was actually quite nice but by the time it arrived, I couldn’t care less! There are so many amazing places to go to in London, why put yourself through this?

With quality food, friendly staff, quick service and excellent value for money, Nando's is a great place to eat. Don't expect identikit, pre-fab restaurant interiors which are usually a staple of the larger chains; each restaurant is tailored to its local surroundings and customers, offering up a unique restaurant experience to go with the equally unique taste of legendary, Portuguese, Peri-Peri chicken.
