The Boatyard
8-13 High Street, Leigh-on-Sea, SS9 2EN
Some restaurants focus on food, some on atmosphere and a few succeed in getting both of them right. The Boatyard's main attraction maybe it's location in Old Leigh fishing village with uninterrupted views of The Thames estuary, but the cooking puts up a good fight and it's a photo-finish in grabbing the diner's attention. The cuisine here is labelled as modern European, so expect to find starters of Scottish smoked salmon and baked Portobello mushroom layered with beef tomato. Meat and fish dishes are far more ambitious with seared duck breast with fresh orange segments and spiced orange sauce, and poached natural smoked haddock fillets with spinach and creamed black caviar sauce. The dessert list is appealing as well, with rhubarb and clotted crème brûlée and a zesty lemon curd cheesecake. Some restaurants focus on food, some on atmosphere and a few succeed in getting both of them right. REVIEWS OF The Boatyard
Dan Vaux-Nobes (14 December 2008)
I left a less than complimentary review for The Boatyard restaurant on this site back in 2004. This afternoon I returned to The Boatyard for a meal to celebrate my partner’s birthday, and I think it only fair that I redress the balance and write a complimentary review, as I feel the experience warrants it. The atmosphere was great, packed and lively with a piano player providing some background music. The service was attentive and competent, and a mix up with the food order was sorted out quickly and apologetically. The food was really nice and well presented with pretty generous portions, so no complaints there. It's not nice to be negative, especially to a local Leigh business, so it's great to see such an improvement. The Boatyard seems to have ironed out pretty much all the problems I encountered the last time I visited back in 2004. I'd definitely eat there again and would recommend it to my friends and family.

This restaurant looks stunning and benefits from a great position in Leigh. However, a meal last Saturday was full of disappointments. Parking is an understandable problem in the area, so we tried to use the valet parking service, only to hear that our Honda was not up to their standards. We were told to look for another parking space, but then we saw a Mercedes being parked for the owner, who I'm pleased to say, left no tip. Then, after a twenty minutes wait, past our reservation time, at the bar, we were led to a table on the mezzanine floor. Then on, the bad service started. The waitress attending us was obviously over stretched, a little in the way of manners, and provided very little help with the menu. The menu itself was, to say, confusing and uninspiring, and many of the items were unavailable. We opted for a prawn and crayfish cocktail, which was served in a horrifically dated ice-cream glass, and was of a quality, akin to that of your local Harvester. At £10 it was well, below standard. My main course of fillet steak was well done, despite asking for it rare. The vegetable, which are sold separately, were the sorriest sight I have ever seen! At £21, and something like £4 for vegetable, and £3 for potatoes, it was an extremely poor value for my money. My girlfriend's pork dish was equally poor, and the meat was very dry and almost tasteless. Overall, this restaurant was rather cliquey, as if to provide a place for the staff to impress their friends, though it definitely did not impress me! Trying to serve far too many covers, as if to be an up market Macdonalds, does not make for a pleasant dining experience.
